Single threaded or Hyper threaded
« on: September 01, 2016, 09:48:00 AM »
Curious as to the game infrastructure in AH III. Have not had fps issues and with the higher quality graphics, I'm assuming it is Hyper threaded.

Back ground loads are done in a different thread.

By background loads you mean upcoming terrain? Just curious as this has proven to be a Limfac in other games....

But like I said no issue so far but you can see 1 core is getting slammed.

Same question another way. Is it a benefit for AH3 to have a processor with more than 4 cores? About to buy one and if it makes a difference, I will spring for more cores.

Terry, the game runs fine on two cores. However, the more stuff you have running in the background the more you will benefit from more cores if you can address the other tasks to the cores that are unused by the game. Four should be enough, though, lots of background clutter can cause other issues than just using your cpu.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

Ran Resource Monitor in background while playing AHIII Pre-Release 3 on my box (in sig below).

CPU Monitor showed Core 0 running at around 70%-80%, Core 9 running around 30%-35%, Core 10 running around 22%-27%.
Core 2 running 0%, Core 4 running around 1%-4%, Core 6 running around 10%-12%. Total CPU avg usage showing 17%-22%.

Core 1 parked, Core 3 parked, Core 5 parked, Cores 7 and 8 parked, Core 11 parked (so it appears that no Hyper-threading is occurring during AHIII as all logical cores are "parked"). CPU is set to OC to 4.0GHz boost in Gigabyte F22 UEFI.

I do have several resources running in the background while playing AHIII:

SB X7 Control Panel, CH CMCC, Kapersky AVG, MSI Afterburner, Bigfoot Killer Networks Manager, CorsairLink 4, Gigabyte App Center, Logitech Mouse and Keyboard, Samsung Magician (ones that are set up to show in Notifications Bar....have about 6 more running in background that I know of as well). Have used BlackViper's Services list and have edited services on my box also. Still have a fair amount of processes running on my box (75 processes as shown in Task Manager).

Tried to take a snippet of all 12 cores but couldn't get it done in time so I typed the core usage % as recorded.

Game runs fine around 79-80 FPS everywhere except on the ground where it runs around 64-71 FPS but all gameplay is smooth (use AMD FRTC in addition to AMD FreeSynch).

This is what I've seen occurring on my box.

Great post Pudgie!

Bottom line is CPU matters as well...especially in a high clutter environment.

GPU offload is awesome though!!  No issues seen with my 980ti card.
