Oculus is hosting its
Oculus Connect 3 https://www.oculusconnect.com/ event over the next couple of days (started for devs yesterday). Lots of new announcements have dropped over the last couple of hours, which have implications for those curious about VR on this forum. Latest news tidbits from the event:
- Asynchronous Spacewarp (ASW), allows lower end machines to run its Rift VR headset significantly better. That in turn resulted in...
- Specs for VR-ready PC being lowered. That also implies that upgrading current machines for VR will cost less.
- Four Oculus VR-ready laptops were announced.
- Rift accessories are being self-developed and added, such as Rift headphones (high end).
- Oculus Touch controllers ship on Dec 6th at US$199 plus tax. Pre-orders for Touch begin on Oct 10th. (Touch controllers are track-able in VR.)
Much was announced on the software end (new games, developer subsidies, etc.) as well. Oculus showed off a working prototype of a
fully wireless, 6DOF Rift. A wireless Rift would mean not only no connector wires at all, but possibly even no need for an IR camera to track 6 DOF position as well. No more info on that yet.
In particular, ASW could be a literal game-changer for AH players, because it's a runtime/software solution that Oculus is instituting that would lower the bar for entry into VR gaming. This alone could be a huge benefit to the AH community.
FWIW,
