The Rift uses a 2160 x 1200 resolution with a 90Hz refresh rate. 1080 x 1200 for an eye. There's the hit.

Why is it that rez would take a hit? To resource intensive Im guessing.

Because you wear 2 tiny screens on your head. If you had 2 bigger screens the headset would be bigger and heavier.

You mean hypothetically, since there is currently a real world limit and we are discussing an actual product.

Well in the sense that it will very likely change in a matter of days rather then years I think it's not so hypothetical, I feel very strongly by this time next year the current VR systems will be considered entry level at best. And I'd expect those to drop by 50% in the next year.
Time will tell.
I've watched trends in this field since the very early 70's when folks were having arguments about state of the art phono pick up's for their Dual turntables and the DEC PDP-11 was one bad prettythang 16 bit computing monster that an individual could own for a few thousands of dollars.

They are just moving faster now I'm holding off till next year this time maybe I can save up within that time to afford buy one of the current ones.
I'm always a year behind.

The physical size has absolutely no relation to resolution. That statement cannot be argued, whether it was made twenty years ago or you hear it twenty years from now.
The only REAL world limit on that is Money right now the technology exists to put much better resolution in a much smaller physical screen it just was never needed before now so that will change radically if there proves to be a market to support it.

Actually he is somewhat correct. During Rift development a big discussion point was around resolution limits, some of the video protocols such as HDMI didn't allow for a  4k x 1200 outpoint, same with the video cards. I believe some of the latest HDMI standards do support it now, but you'd need a hell of a video card/CPU setup.

Old school VR panels were way smaller than the Rifts (an 800x600 panel that was a quarter inch squared).

Also the Rift tried to use panels similar in size to smartphone panels to achieve low cost.

I prefer hookers, they're more expensive, but you get to do more with em....
On the VR topic, When I'm wearing the set and flying a plane, I really can't comprehend how any different resolution will make a difference.  It looks real sized, correctly proportioned and all. How will a different resolution screen effect the experience?

The higher the resolution on the same physical size the better the image quality. More details, less jagged edges in diagonal lines. Same as with monitors.

I still think I would miss my keyboard  :old:

I want to type stuff, sometimes I need to do like tab - 4 - 1 , do you set it up as a macro on your Hotas, or have a macro key on keyboard, or do you find it easy to find yourself on the keyboard ?

Also when you want to switch back to the monitor for other uses, how do you solve it ?

I use TrackIr today so I guess it's a cheap charlie VR solution nowadays..

Does Cliffs of Dover / Battle of Stalingrad support it ?
