When I played on a laptop it was an earlier model of that laptop. It was a beast but pricey heavy and it would get so hot forget having it in your lap. More a desktop replacement sorta deal.

---it would get so hot forget having it in your lap.---

Actually the manuals of most laptops tell not to use the laptop on a soft surface such as your lap to ensure sufficient airflow for cooling. The name is very misleading.

I never did either, with mine after an hour of gaming it would burn the toejam out of you if you did. Although the newer one mentioned with liquid cooling would likely not be as hot coffee

Another cool laptop story: At a con I walked by a squaddie playing on a then year old gaming laptop. The exhaust air almost fried my bacon! So of course I immediately took my tools and de-dusted it. But that wasn't all. I also attached a pair of 1 cm high bumpons at the hinge end. Almost a year later he told me in game that the laptop still stayed relatively cool.

The ongoing fashion of thinnest possible laptops has made the manufacturers lower the original pads in a manner that hinders airflow. I wonder how they handle issues caused by overheating during the warranty period.

What do you guys think of the Razer Blade?   Externally housed graphics card connected to the laptop via Thunderbolt cable?

I like the idea a lot. The built-in video cards in laptops have often died due to heat and they're extremely expensive compared to their performance. The external graphics housing allows for upgrading the graphics at desktop price, desktop performance. Talk about longevity...

What biz said, having never used one I can't speak for the performance personally but neat you can put a desktop gpu in one. Pricey though.

Not-on-your-lap top

I have one here I need to see if it will load AH3 or not. Its supposedly a gaming laptop but I havent ever tried it yet

An update, I installed Ah3 on a sager laptop, disabled everything, and was getting 48 fps. All of a sudden I started getting texture error notices in the chat window and then started losing textures from the terrain, map, and clipboard. Exiting the game and restarting it still has texture errors. Re-enabling everything still has texture errors. The laptop loaded the DX9 version of the game.

Edit 2 - Changed textures to 512, everything came back. Getting 41 fps sitting in tower. Spawn aircraft or vehicle, fps slowly takes a dive until it hits 4. End sortie, sitting in tower, FPS stays in the single digits until about 30 seconds, then slowly gets back to 40+ fps. At the same time all the fans are screaming and its putting out loads of hot air. Guessing video card is getting hot and slowing down, or it just cant quite cut it
Everything worked great until the error messages started showing up in the chat window, then it started going south. Still getting 40+ fps though

Or one could probably build a Mini-ITX system for the same size and half the cost.

I tried out 2 new MSI gaming laptops in the shop last weekend, one was a 1070 SLI, the other a single 1080, but both didn't have that huge cooling system either, and were standard laptop size (well, sort of, one was 18.4").  While not as fast as what Asus is building, they are more portable for sure, and pretty close in terms of performance - IMO at least, as I had a 1080 SLI system I've posted here before, and I find fewer and fewer games take advantage of SLI, even using nVidia Inspector and every other trick to try and boost SLI performance, it's mostly out of ones hands and in the hands of those creating the SLI profile.  I say had as I sold one of the 1080 cards, and bought a new Titan for that system instead.  Also, SLI doesn't function much with VR yet.

Linus Tech Tips did a preview of an early of this Asus system in the OP not long ago, and the good news is it'll still work without the cooling rig attachment, it just dials down performance, so IMO it's a great option for frequent travelers, as you can leave part of it in your checked baggage, and take the smaller/slimmer main unit to your seat and still be able to use it, then go desktop-equivalent once you've hit your hotel or destination.

Performance laptops will always cost more, but if you travel a lot and like to game still, it's nice having the option.  There are some smaller sticks available too, but it'd be nice to see a travel sized hotas with a rocker throttle for the rudder, even though that market is minuscule to be sure.

A LOT of 970 and 980M equipped Asus and MSI gaming laptops going for huge discounts up here as black Friday approaches, one 1600$ loaded 17.3 970 is slatted for $700 dollars off (CDN dollars).  I'm glad we swapped out 970 for our 1060 laptop when we did, as their value is about to plunge a lot.

I bought a Asus desktop last year. It's working great. Fast as lightening, special lighting software to set the tower at any colors you want(three different parts to light up). I5 processor, 1TB HD, 250 ssd, 8gb ram and gtx980 card, z99 mobo(or x99mobo not sure lol). It runs AH3 really well. I think I bought it for $1200 bucks. Never got a problem with it since. It's gonna be 1 year old.
