TV screen instead of PC screen.
« on: November 25, 2016, 02:15:00 PM »
A 32" screen is $500, a 32" TV is $130_ish. Both use HDMI. I heard TVs have input lag. Is it trully noticeable when playing a game like AH? What else should I worry about?

TV's often have input lag, but it depends on the model. Some have it less than others. There's some sites that have tested some TV sets and if you go by their results I can't stress enough to get the exact model number. http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/ is one source.

Does it affect AH? If what you see is constantly three frames or more behind what's actually happening, you might have the bad guy in your six instead of your pipper. The planes can fly quite fast up there. How far can a plane fly during 3 frames, or worse, how close can one get?

Well here is the thing, you talk about 3 frames but I see screens around 5ms and TVs around 40 to 70 ms. I run at 60 frames per seconds in game ... 10s of ms is not even 1 frame. Do you see why Im confused?

If the ms's are too high, you may experience a ghosting effect while playing.

Here is an another thing I don't understand. When playing Xbox on my old TV I had 'ghosting' while watching car racing. The vendor said it was because of the refresh rate in Hz. I went to a 240 refresh rate and it went away. Ms was never mentioned, are u sure ms and ghosting is related?

Check this out.  He talks about response time at around 01:57

I use an old 42" screen, so old it actually has a DVI input. Yes, there can be some ghosting at times, but honestly I almost never notice.

Do some research on tv's used as computer monitors. You will find certain models do better than others handling a computer signal. Don't base your decision solely on the name brand of the tv. Some brands do not handle computer inputs very well.

My tv is an eight, or nine year old Westinghouse 42". At the time I bought it it had some of the best reviews for a bargain flat screen used as a computer monitor.

I use this tv

with HDMI connection on a GTX670 and have zero issues. No ghosting, no lag nothing. Smooth as silk.

I run a 50" VIZIO from 2012.  60fps, low latency, etc.  Works awesome, zero problems, no input lag detected as long as you turn off post-processing features on the TV itself.  Overscanning, motion flow, true video, noise cancellation, etc..

When talking about frames, we're talking about the combined lag. That means response time added to input lag. Response time is how fast a monitor can go from black to white to black again, although for marketing issues it's usually grey to grey which is a much shorter time. That is what can cause ghosting. As you said, that usually is about 5 ms for monitors and 40 to 70 for TV sets.

So if your combined lag is less than 10 ms, it's less than a frame. Each 17 ms (100 ms/60 Hz, or 1/60 of a second) adds a frame to the count so 70 ms would add four frames.

The main issue is to find the TV with the shortest combined lag.

Frenchy,

I have been using a 55in LG tv for many years! Like Sik1 I use a DVI input simply because it's there and I dont need sound on the TV!

You will notice some ghosting, usually I see it in the ICONs when I move my views but it's not a big deal. Some TV's are better than others so do your research.

BTW,32 is too small..... :devil  Look at a 40 or larger screen and you will never go back to a comp monitor!  I hope to get a 70 in class TV soon, waiting till the new 2017 screens come out in March or so.

If you can find a tv with less than 40 ms input lag you wont notice any lag as it will be within the general internet lag. The best TV's are between 20 and 40 ms,sony, samsung,LG and a few others all make models that that fall into this range!

Oh and dont be fooled by display lag, thats how fast the pixel change and not the same as input lag,my LG has a supposed 1ms display lag but the input lag is around 35ms.....

If you have the room and can sit the proper distance away a large display is IMHO the way to go,like you I cant handle VR so I want a life size cockpit........ :devil

Have a Sony 4k TV, 120hz capable at 1080p..60hz at 4k.

There are websites which tell you how to determine TV LAG. (The easiest way is to run this http://tft.vanity.dk/inputlag.html on TV and monitor, and then take a picture of it.  You will see two different times on the program, and the difference is TV LAG. Mine is about 30ms.)

Most newer TVs have a game mode setting which turns off all the "special effects" and minimizes the lag (If I turn off everything on my TV I see about 20ms lag).

I run an HDMI cable to the TV and DVI to the monitor.

To be honest, I don't really see a difference between monitor and TV in game play....I have zero ghosting, and running at 120hz makes the game more fluid, but I really like the 4k beauty....it looks awesome!

So take a look at the options out there, and do some research on "best TV for gaming" on the internet....it is what made me buy the TV I currently use.

Cheers!

 Max,

I cant see up close, inside about 18 inches everything is a blurr,I tried glasses made to work with comp screens but if I moved my head to far one way or the other I was out of focus!

So I went with a big screen, first I used a 47 in and sat about 3 to 4 ft away and it was great, except it was a 3d tv and I had some issues with it and moved it to the living room as my movie screen, then I got the 55,I had to sit back slightly, about 4 to 5 ft. This was so I could see the whole screen, any closer and you have to move your eyes/head to see the whole thing!

I simply wall mounted the TV behind my comp desk and only had to move my chair about a foot back! I made a "special" chair to fly with,it mounts all the controls to the arms. It's so comfortable I do most my computer work on it now and use the big screen all the time, nothing like having up to 4 full size pages open at the same time..... :devil

I suggest anyone interested just connect to any tv that is capable and give it a try,I see, well sort of see planes at about 3 to 4 inches in size when they are inside 200 yds, doesnt help my shooting but I can see the planes now,on a 27 in monitor I cant see anything till I run into them....... :o :o :o
