gtx 1070 & Black Friday

I expected better deals on the low end of the 1070 model. It didn't work out that way, but the upper range dropped considerable (in the 1070 model).

The EVGA site has a nice comparison table for each of their lines. This is the 1070:

The EVGA site sale price on an 08G-P4-6276-KR is $460xx but on Amazon, the same card is/was $409xx until Saturday. This compared to 407xx for the one Amazon is pushing (compared to 399xx on EVGA). iirc, the 6276 was $470+ a few weeks ago.

There are probably better deals on the web if you know reliable dealers. The point is, if you're in the market, check out the specs before you click on a 'more affordable' card and compare it with the price on a 'better' one. For $2 more, I picked a much better card.

What do you personally look for in the GPU specs? How do you determine the difference between a high end 1070 and a low end 1070? I've been looking mostly at the clock speeds.

I've been burned before, so the first things I look at are the clock speeds. Then I look at things like dual bios and in the case of these new cards, a back plate because these are big cards. Also, you want to have some idea which fan group has less noise. I don't over clock but some of these cards are factory over clocked.

Normally the price ranges would push me toward a slower card with no backplate or dual bios.

Oh, and I was hoping to see more competition for the other manufactures but alas, no.

I see. I was a little disappointed in the lack of competition myself, but I'm hoping that Cyber Monday will have some great deals. I'm one piece of information away (regarding logistics and getting these parts consolidated while I'm away from home) from pulling the trigger on my shopping cart right now and picking up my whole list for a roughly 100 dollar discounted price, or waiting for Cyber Monday to see if I can get the same/better parts for cheaper.

The 10xx series is brand new, so prices will not fluctuate much. EVGA's are probably on sale because they blow up.

Yikes. I hope their 3 year warranty is worth more then the pixels it's printed on.

1 of the items that I would suggest to look for when shopping for any make of graphics card is whether active cooling is provided on the power regulation\mosfets as well as the GPU\mem modules (HSF\liquid cooling loop making actual contact on them to provide max cooling...not just air being blown over them).

This is the major reason why the EVGA series of 1070\1080 below the Classified line are failing....the onboard power regulation\mosfets do not have active cooling applied directly on them to keep them from reaching overheat\meltdown conditions when the GPU's go into boost clocks\OC'd.

EVGA is in the process of correcting this.

I guess to add on to Pudgie's point I paid a bit more for a 2 fan version of the GTX 1060....Gigagbyte also highlights their use of copper "heat pipes" to aid cooling.....sounds good anyways, I think the dual fans at least have to help.

On top of my priority list would be cooling and stability i.e. backplate. As shown in the EVGA link, the clock rates are within 7% or so, which doesn't show much in performance. Getting from 58 to 60 fps doesn't improve gameplay, getting from 28 to 30 fps tells that your system is too weak to start with.

I bought all the parts for my new computer last year on Black Friday.  By Cyber Monday prices were on the rise again.

I'd figured it would happen, but I was waiting on a mailing address for a person stateside that will be holding my parts until I get my own address.  If anything, I'll try to take advantage of some deals while I can. Building a PC is something that I've always wanted to do, and if I have to pay the full 15-1700 then I suppose it's worth it to me.

I'm still holding on to a little hope of seeing some steals, but if anything my steal will have been getting home alive

I've had good luck with Gigabyte. Basically any brand but EVGA at the current moment. They are trying to fix the issue but people ordering their new cards are still having issues with cards catching on fire.
