Award Tagline: "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes."
Honoree: Captain Charles Kegelman was a 5th USAAF B-25 bomber pilot. On a mission to De Koor airdrome near Wewak New Guinea, approaching his target Capt. Kegelman's aircraft took anti aircraft fire which knocked off the starboard propeller. This in turn started an engine fire and caused damage to the starboard wing. The B-25 lost altitude bouncing off the ground in a struggle to keep the aircraft airborne. Captain Kegelman and crew observed the guns of an adjacent flak tower turning fire on their bomber on its egress. Captain Kegelman was able to turn the nose of his B-25H in the direction of the flak tower and opened up at close range. Fire from the enemy flak tower ceased immediately. Captain Kegelman nursed the wreckage that he was flying back to his home base. The Captain was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions.
Requirement: Destroy 15 ground guns in a B-25H in a single sortie, without loosing your B-25. This achievement awarded only upon successful landing.
