The cooling duct. It works exactly like a whistle does.

I was always lead to believe it was the gun ports, and only on the D's.   :headscratch:

Yes, but airflow across the mouth of those tubes is not 90 degrees in flight. Perhaps turbulence plays a part? I still favor the air duct, because there are Mustangs out there without the gun ports and yes they still whistle.

Mustangs without gunport make the same sound.  Watch a video of Lee flying Crazy Horse.

its dives and pull ups on the gunports and on several openings more than likely the lower intake and the nose intake. its air rushing over an open hollow area :airplane:
