Need some help
« on: January 16, 2017, 11:07:43 AM »
Hello computer geeks, I have an Asus ROG gaming computer and I'm having issues with the DVD/cd drive not opening. I opened it manually and popped in a disk to see if it gets detected but nothing. So just the other day again  I just pushed the bottom on it and it opened and detected a disk. I took out the disk and tried again to see if it got fixed permanently but there again it won't open or detect any disk. Any help on this problem guys?

Might be a connector issue as simple as dust. Or a loose joint somewhere inside the drive.

They're very easy to detach, usually a single screw through a lip in the back of the drive. Unscrew that and pull the drive off. The lip and the front panel are interchangeable (the latter can be fiddly) so getting a replacement is very easy and inexpensive.

I'm so sketchy about opening the computer. It's so small and everything is compact. YouTube Asus ROG and you will see what I am talking about.

Oh, I was thinking about a laptop. They usually have that one single screw holding the optical drive in the slot. Now that I started thinking about it, I just opened a Vista based gaming laptop that had two screws securing the optical... And sometimes the screw is under the bottom service hatch. Anyhow, that's very straightforward to do unlike many other things inside a laptop. The drive just slides in like on rails and gets plugged into a set connector.

If it's a desktop built very tight, it can be more fiddly. The main issue would be to find and detach the cables without twisting anything.

I was having problems as well, I buy very cheap CD rom drives. They fail a lot. So I got a new one, it would not work. I cannot help but wonder if the industry, which is pushing USB sticks, is leaving proper drivers behind or just not supporting CD roms.

My new build had to use usb install media, I could not get CD rom install media to work, period.?????????????????
