Ju-88 with deep blue color?

The plane's code is in the report - VR + FR. VR is the squadron indicator. Look for that.

That could be a Ju-88-C variant from the look of the  FuG 2## Lichtenstein.  Part of the NJG group.

The model is not the same plane in the report.


I've seen RLM 72 represented as a deep blue on seplanes of the Kreigsmarine. But the color is referred to as a green.

Yea, I see where you got the VR.  My apologies.

I got it.  In that report is a Ju88A-14, WNr.550296, B3+AP of 6./KG54 which crashed at Horton Priory, Sellindge, Kent on the 21st January 1944.  Interestingly the same unit as the Swiss captured Ju88A-4, B3+MH. This Ju88A-4 flew with 1./KG54? and landed in Dübendorf Switzerland on 21 October 1943 after the crew had lost their bearings. Also noted as having camouflage described as thus:

"The aircraft was painted water-blue (unknown hue) on its upper surfaces throughout, upon which a wave-type pattern (sand yellow Nr.79) had been sprayed." Merrick

This would be vary interesting to see photos of them.

Bizarre color combination. Makes no sense to use blue with tan.

Here is a period color picture of a FW 200. RLM 72 is the color on the nose, which is a deep blue-green. Still, VR is the squad code you want to find for the plane in the report.

That is another thing in question about RLM.  The debate I have been reading was if RLM83 was deep blue or dark green.  All this surrounds the JU-88 and Bf109G and Bf-109K that had a deep blue color.  All this got started with Fw190A-8 WNr.17514. It's confusing that I am trying to make senses out of it.

Never less, important part is did these Ju-88 containing a deep blue paint exists.  With what little reports we have it is not good enough to say yes.

When it comes to the late war colors, there was wide variance in the colors actually painted. Also, with the variance in the fresh paints is variance seen when faded and weathered. Problem is that there have been no completely documented cases of Luftwaffe (not Kreigsmarine) planes using a blue camouflage. Like the report posted above , there are no pictures of these aircraft in "blue." 

According to this post, RLM 83 was indeed blue, but was reserved for bombers operating over the Med.

 So there is a good possibility that VR+FR wore RLM 83. But we first need to figure out the unit and find a photo of an aircraft from that unit.

On the other hand, I am not inclined to believe reports of blue 109's and 190's.
