As for Svengali and Trilby, George du Maurier was making money off the fad of Gothic horror at the time. That was the real Svengaliish taking advantage of people paying money for a mind reading show. Give people what they want to believe, and they will give you money even if it's a lie because they have already slipped their own critical factor for the magician on the stage to lead astray.
