I'm in the receiving end of it.
Even with the classic high-12 attack a good gunner can cripple your plane long before you get in to your own shooting distance and they should be at disadvantage shooting at a very small target - the fighter  basically have 3 barn-doors to shoot at.
My ammo last for 6 Lancasters, or one Yak3.

This shouldn't even be a question really...  I mean, if you're approaching a set of buffs from their 6:00, you're just meat anyways.

You should do slashing attack patters from a High 10:00->2:00 aiming for cockpit and wing roots.  This gives you the biggest cross section to shoot at, a lead shot so they fly into your bullets as opposed to away, and keeps you within a firing solution the least amount of time, and if done right, moving through their arcs faster than the guns can traverse.

You can use the .target command to bring up the target and move the distance closer and further to make a list of how far every gun in aces high will go whether facing backwards or forwards.

Then you will know how to creep up on buffs so you can lob big cannon shells at them from a safe distance.
