Skin Adoption - Philosophy
« on: November 21, 2017, 03:10:20 PM »
So, now that we are officially running with the skin adoption program I have been thinking it over.   My intent is to preserve as much of the original artist's work (skinning is art for sure) as practical while making it viable for the current game. I look at it like preservation or restoration similar to what the CAF is doing with its nose art collection.

Obviously this is not required but I think it is a nice gesture.  Am I missing something with this approach?   I don't intend to be credited with someone else's work but hate the notion of wiping it out.  The former can be somewhat rectified with a disclaimer in the description but in game not so much.

Thoughts?

Seeing as you will be doing a ground-up rework of the old skin, what will eventually be in the game when you finish will be entirely your own work. Therefore you should be given full credit for the skin at that point.

The minute you adopted the skin, the previous skinner is no longer attached to it.  His/her name is removed from the entire skin.  There is no link back to the original skinner.

The CAF analogy does not work.  You are not restoring something to its original state.  Quite the opposite.  You are going to bring it up to the standards of today.

Personally I just want to produce the most accurate skin I can for the game and am not intending to preserve anything from the original skinner's work.

That is the correct approach.

Adoption is nothing more than claiming a predefined slot to skin.

Makes sense.  I will definitely use the original as inspiration.

If this is the case, can you please put my name in instead of Larry's on the FW-190D9 I redid?  [190D91073007]

So we can skin any aircraft or does it have to copy the original skin?

The names of the irrelevant have been changed to protect their irrelevance.
The names of the innocent and the guilty have not been changed.
As for the innocent, everyone needs to know they are innocent –
As for the guilty… they can suck it.

I'd also like an answer to this. There are some skins I'd like to adopt but change the individual plane while retaining the original squadron.

An adopted skin is predefined, and must stay the same.  This prevents the squad who is using that skin from coming unhinged when their skin of choice has been removed because it got adopted.  You do not want to be that skinner.

Fencer, I was unaware of a kin you had which did not have your name on it.  I'll get that taken care of.

So for example, a skin for a 109 that is a specific squadron with White 4 markings can be adopted and re-done, but cannot be changed to White 5? White 5 would have to be submitted as a separate skin?

While you are at it, my 12PRG P-51B has spaces in the name.   Is that an easy fix?

Thanks for all you're doing for the skinner group.  Much appreciated.

I need the skin reference number and exactly how it should be shown.

19    2017-11-16 11:06:02    P51B0110172017    10 PRG/12 PRS by Vraciu

If I understand the skin naming conventions it should have no spaces:  10PRG/12TRS .

(I also mistakenly called it a PRS not a TRS.   10PRG/12TRS .)

Thanks again.  Sorry for the error.
