Windows 10 or not?
« on: January 15, 2018, 06:41:37 PM »
So it appears if I want to upgrade my motherboard I need to find one that is compatible with Windows 7 otherwise I am forced to go to 10.

What are the pros and cons of going from Win7 to Win10?

Win7 support will end in 2 years, whereas Win10 will run until your hardware becomes too old for it.

Cons for Win10: You can't control the update behaviour much. The Pro version gives some more options, but even that only allows you to postpone updates, not opt them out. That and other background activity included in the OS itself is hard to tame.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

I tried researching the latest round of security issues being reported as CPU and chipset design flaws and I found where Windows is being patched. I don't want to sound like a conspiracy fanatic, but this seems to be well timed to impact older machines and drive a movement to Windows 10 machines and even away from Linux based servers, because of the huge (30%) impact it is supposed to have on performance. Intel is pushing for fundamental redesigns of Windows and Linux, and while that is not good it is also very unlikely to happen anytime soon (if at all).

I have avoided that update for Windows 7.  I am suspect of it too.

Even if it is not true, seems the cure is worse than the disease.
