Are we getting ready to invade North Korea?

I live in Kentucky.  There is a big military exercise going on at Fort Knox with units from across the country, including Puerto Rico and Hawaii (this is all common knowledge).  I just saw a flight of A-10s take off from Louisville.  They are not based here.  I inquired, and two different sources said "We are training for North Korea".  It is all reserve units though. 

Contingency plan or preparation for invasion?  Lets not forget, exactly 15 years ago we invaded Iraq for less.

Training for NK and invading NK are two vastly different things.  The latter would probably result in some sort of nuclear exchange.  No jihadis in NK, last I heard.

I'm betting we are.  We have a brand new National Security Advisor who is a warhawk.  History doesn't repeat itself, but it sure does a good imitation.  We thought Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.  We know North Korea does.  If our military units suddenly pull out of Seoul, then that will be a very strong indicator, as it is pre-registered by North Korean artillery.

It's that time of year, when military thoughts turn to North Korea.

Seriously, if anything ever goes on in Korea, it'll be the spring.  That means right NOW is when units tasked to deal with that shxtfest have their troops out getting familiar with a short but weighty list of warplans involving the Korean peninsula.

This time back in 2005 and 2006, I was actually in Korea, helping our command structure hold our annual springtime practice war.  It usually starts with absorbing an invasion by the North into S. Korea, ending with a MASSIVE humanitarian relief effort that would go through the remainder of the spring and summer to try to save 15-20 MILLION North Koreans from starvation before the next winter arrives.

So... it's an annual series of exercises, nothing to see here, move along.

Haven’t heard that range mentioned in a long time.  I deposited many a blue bomb there years ago.

Eagl has a good point.  It’s is about time for the annual Team Spirit Exercise, if that’s what it’s still called.

It was already acknowledged and accepted that the US, S. Korea and Japan military forces would be picking up their exercises just as soon as and right after the Olympics/ParaOlympics had been completed in S. Korea

You do not want to pick a fight with N Korea. Military the outcome is obvious, N Korea will fall in a matter of weeks at most. But they have an insane amount of artillery and Seoul and several other cities are within firing range (plus all the troops long the border). Before all their guns can be destroyed they would have inflicted some massive damage on both cities and among the troops. Having a few thousand artillery pieces pouring grenades on you will lead to casualties..

And as Eagl said, the relief operation after N Korea is defeated would be extremely costly, you would have to pour a few trillion dollars into it in order to get it back on its feet...

Is NK taking an idea from "the mouse that roared" with the idea that "losing a war" will bring in what is basically a rescue of his country?

I don't see it happening unless China is on board.  Well, if we had any other president at the helm at least. This one might do anything regardless of the consequences.  If we take North Korea without consent from China first, I think China takes Taiwan and dares a nuclear confrontation if we try to stop them.

Getting consent from China should be easy.  Offer them a 100 year lease on North Korea, like the Brits had for Hong Kong, or the US had for Panama.  China keeps their buffer state, assumes the cost of keeping the North Koreans from starving, the most dangerous dictator on the planet is deposed, the North and South can open up their borders over time, and the South gets a rebuilt and re-educated North back when the lease is up.  Its also least traumatic to the North Korean people because they view the Chinese as their sole friend in the world.

It turns out our military units were pulled out of Seoul to a massive base outside of North Korean artillery range in November of 2017.

Yes, I know we practice military exercises in Korea.  The Egyptians practiced breaching Israeli defenses frequently too, until it became commonplace and they pulled off an invasion in 1973 with ease.

The two things that have changed with North Korea are the development of a thermonuclear bomb and a rocket capable of carrying it to the continental U.S.  I believe that is a game changer.
