Tool for getting rid of Windows 10 spying
« on: April 04, 2018, 03:13:08 PM »
Just came across this handy free tool to manage and turn off Windows 10 spying in an easy way.  I didn't know about it previously, but was just recommended by a computer-expert friend of mine.  Thought I'd mention it to they AH community in case of interest.

https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

It's from a Germany company.  (I'm often wary of using software unless it is from a US company, a Japanese company, a German company, etc.)

Previously, I've been doing it manually, but I'm going to switch to using this on the new computer I'm just setting up for Aces High.

Hmm.  I should have checked here more before posting.  There are already some posts from from others a while back on ShutUp10.

These things are good to be reminded about. I don't recall having read about it before.  :aok

Now that you mentioned it, I remember having seen your post. However, since September 2015 there's been quite a many version updates for 10 so it's good to know the tools still work.

Seems to work well.  Just tried it yesterday on a co-worker's Windows 10 machine.  It found lots of spy stuff still enabled on his machine, so we used ShutUp10 to turn it all off.  Everything seems still to work fine.

O&O have been keeping it updated. You should remember to revert to original settings before updating, to avoid stability issues in Windows 10. Should you run into those issues you may have to reinstall W10, or reset it. So, remain vigilant.

Are you guys afraid of bloatware or the collection of information?

I'm mostly concerned about background activity causing anomalies during gaming.

My concerns are equal for both, truth be told.

I don't want companies invading my privacy, spying on everything click and type, and storing it for their use.

It's already worse than you think. Make sure to read the updated Microsoft terms of service agreement. Any Service they provide may be denied to any user they deem to be involved in things like criminal activity. Windows is a service now. They are monitoring blogs, emails, Word documents, Windows usage, and probably more than we know. If another freedom based operating system came along I would jump on it.

It's not just Windows 10 doing data collections.  All Microsoft applications are doing it as well.

On another systems related site we decided to count the data points Windows 10 collects and came up with 3,582 data points being monitored and collected.  It's not just the clicks, but how long it takes between clicks, the color of what you are clicking on, the wording and font used, how long between sessions, how long are the sessions, how much activity during the sessions, what applications are being used...and so on.

You are not doing anything on a Windows 10 computer without Microsoft being intimately aware of it.

There is not a tool on the planet capable of blocking it all.
