Airfields
« on: September 15, 2018, 02:49:18 PM »
(Wiah)  I would like to see  an airfield that was just a field for take off and landing. Kind of like the fields one see's in original films of WW 2. It could be in light green like the one beside the PSP runway. I think one here and there would be very good. It could be in the small airfield in between the hanger's and other stuff.

I have seen these in eastern front FSOs, small fields.

Only take-off and landing, but no ... touch and go? No spawning? No safe exit flight? No rearming? No guns, automatic or manual? No GVs? No radar? ...

It would be an airfield just like the regular airfields , the only difference would be the runway. If you land any where on the field. it would be a successful landing as always.

What is so hard to understand. It is a regular airfield with an open field for the runway.

My only question is Why? We already have a bunch of fields why is another one needed? What will it bring to the game?

I suppose an element of this:

But for the MA (since events have had this developed in terrains).

Which pretty much makes this an MA terrain submission issue.

I could see such a wish involving easier landings at enemy capped fields, however, and with random spawns it may make vulching harder. Just my perception of what the op may want, is all.

Germans had a lot of airfields that were cleared pastures with hangers to one side or in a localized area. During BoB Britain had dispersed feilds that were pastures to have fighters staged around England. As the war progressed Britain built airfields with concrete runways to support bombers and fighter squadrons. Germany had airfields that got bombed and strafed while moving air groups around to address the England based bombing initiative to large cleared pastures. Once located they were not the best place to be when strafed or bombed. Flak towers were one solution for the Germans and the majority of 8th AAF fighters shot down were from AAA fire below 10k.

The actual object for such a field would be built on a 1x1mile square. Then for capture, I suppose the map room could be integral like with a vbase. The spawns on the ground have 8 possible locations becasue of the keypad. If you don't want buildings or a vhanger, or any self defense ack, it would become a suicide field for uppers since it would have an Icon on the map letting everyone know where the suicide field is for easy vulching. Let alone Hitech would probably not make any specific rule against laying down vehicle spawns to those feilds. One T34 would sit in the center of the 1x1 pasture and slaughter everything.

As for adding another runway between the buildings on the small airfield object, why?

I created something like this on BowlMA. Those three tiny vbases in the center caldera have an extra concrete pad next to the tower where the storch spawns. I put it there for the storch and out of fuel jabo to have a place to tower. If you taxi onto it your clipboard turns green and you can do a towering from it. The open grass field in front of each tower is 1mile long becasue it's a landing feild to get to the safe towering concrete pad. It's not a safe place to get a storch out of half the time if a GV sits anywhere line of sight to the tower. I suppose Hitech could enable Brewsters and I16 at them, the grass strip is long enough for a take off run. Doing that I doubt anyone could safely take off or land kills with other Brew and I16 in the air and no huge layout of auto ack and lots of wirbles to protect them. But, until those tiny vbases are captured, which can be executed with only one M3 and it's 50cal, you can spawn unlimited GV and storches since the GV hanger is indestructible. That caldera is one of a kind and the GV's are trapped there which is probably why it was allowed as an exception to the general MA terrain rules.

Are you asking for another version of the small airfield object that is only a 1x1 pasture with a tower, no map room, no auto ack, no GV hanger? You didn't even mention if it's a capture able field? There is a requirement for 2-3 un-capture able feilds on MA terrains that are near by to the HQ. Hitech would not allow me to include those mini GV bases in the central caldera on BowlMA as one of the three required for each country.

Could you just take two or three small airfields and replace the PSP and grass runways with a large light green field for the landing field. Everything remains the same.

It would be a new object, Waffle has to create that if Hitech likes your wish. Then you have to convince terrain builders to even use it. Each airfield is a complete object Waffle creates and the terrain builder chooses from a menu of objects allowed into the MA. I kludged together those small vbases by adding a concrete pad object next to the tower right where the storch spawn point is. Then I made the 1 mile long area in front of the tower flat and all grass for landing and take off. The unique location inside of a caldera made it feasible.

Your wish then is for the small airfield to be modified into a second version with no runways, just a flat grass area where the original runways were. You are forgetting the spawns for fighters and bombers, along with the whole grass area would have to be a safe towering area now that there would be no defined runways. Hitech has been reducing safe towering areas of late. For the small airfield you can only have two fighter spawns and two bomber spawns since those directions are related to the keypad. So your bombers and fighters would probably continue to spawn at their current locations.

I'm not sure Hitech would go for it but, a terrain builder could duplicate my small vbase setup and enable fighters and bombers by hand. Then place fighter and bomber entry points on the ground around the 1x1 mile area painted in grass and one concrete pad next to the tower. It would be a suicide field for planes taking off or landing, and very easy to capture since it would have only two auto ack and could be captured alone with an M3. MA terrain rules do not allow adding manned guns except for shore battery at ocean fronted feilds.

Though my memory is anything but perfect, I seem to remember a terrain used in the Finnish Winter War events that mimicked grass fields really well. Granted, I always landed diagonally on them (the greatest length) so that may account for not 'landing off the runway.' I kinda think this may be what Shilo wants in the MA. Maybe not.

Those exist and are custom objects Hitech allows in the AvA and SEA arenas. The MA has a pattern to feilds that goes hand in glove with making upping from them feasible and a component of balanced MA game play.
