Found a new system. Is it good?
« on: November 11, 2018, 02:04:34 PM »
I found a new system at a gaming PC store.  I installed AHIII on it and in off-line mode it shows a FPS of 59.  Do you think this is a good one to get?  $700 is the price.

CPU Intel i5-4590 3.3ghz
RAM 16GB X Fury DDR3
Graphics ASUS ROG NVIDIA GTX 760 Striker Edition GDDR5 4GB

Pretty much what I have except my GTX760 is a 2G and 59-60 is good. If your monitor was 120Hz you would have a faster FPS so what kind of monitor do you have?

The specs you gave look decent for AH using a 1920x1080 60 Hz monitor which limits the frame rate to 60 max. You won't get much higher frame rates with a faster monitor with that video card.

The price sounds way too high for the age even if it's an unused one! The GTX760 is a mid-range card from 2013, priced $249 at launch. The processor is from quarter 2/2014 and was about 200 at the time. DDR3 is also slowly outdating, current price for 16 GB is about $150.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

for 700$ you'll almost get a build with current hardware instead of that far outdated stuff.
something like Ryzen 2600 + B450 mainboard + 16 Gigs 3000 DDR4 RAM and RX570/580 8Gig Gfx

Agreed, the PC in the OP is certainly ok for AH3, but that price is not, if it was about 1/2 or even 2/3, then maybe...say $400 ish, but not $700, that's outrageous IMO.  I just sold a used 6850Broadwell E CPU/x99Strixmb/16gb ram setup for $300 USD, another $150 would get a decent used PSU/Case/HD and you'd be good to go for AH3 and have a far superior PC.  I'd really look at the used market on HardwareSwap on reddit and other local avenues for used PC gear, you can beat $700 by a ton, or get a much, much better PC (or a used 144hz monitor with a good used better equipped PC) for that much money IMO.

if you are happy with it and it playes ah3 to your satisfaction then it's money well spent.  I dont think you spent too much.  it's hard to build a decent computer for 700 bucks.  my first built was 700 bucks that was 10 years ago.  was able to spend 500 bucks (sold mobo, ram, and cpu for 200) 5 years ago to upgrade it.  it still plays ah3 better than average.

If you have already bought it and have installed AH3 on it and played, etc... I would guess that it's already a done deal...

Just listing the CPU type, System Ram type/quantity and Graphics card, does not provide a clear picture of what you have actually bought....

Listing the PC case, PSU, HDD/SSD, CDRW/DVD DL RW/BluRay DL RW, MB model, etc... Including OS version would better help others to compare the price you paid for what you actually bought....that and if it was a custom built gaming PC rig from a computer store verses a name brand system like Dell, ASUS, HP, etc.....

Hope this helps

Hey Dennis, could you/would you mind taking the time to post a build list of that AMD Ryzen II PC build, you're saying that can be built for $700?.... Don't forget to include the case, PSU, etc.... If it is possible, I'd like to see it

I would do it myself but have my hands full with my Dad and my medical and Dr appointment / Specialist appointments, etc...

You can run AH on it, but its many generations old and not worth the price.  Especially the GPU.

Prices from Newegg:
Ryzen 5 2600 boxed= 160$
Asrock B450M motherboard = 60$
GSkill Aegis 3000 RAM 2x8 = 125$
RX580 8G = 200$ (20$ less for RX570 8G)
Seasonic Focus Gold 450W = 60$
Crucual BX500 480GB SSD = 80$
That's about 700$ (+ Taxes) for the main/core components. + case and OS if not on hand
One could save 60$ by using just 2x4 or 1x8 RAM or further 20$ by going down to RX570 4G, there may be some good 400W PSU for 40-45$ available but couldn't find them at Newegg

Thanks Denniss, it's been awhile since I have looked at prices....

Heck, I haven't built a new PC in over 4 years....

Bet "black Friday" and "cyber Monday" will bring some good deals

I would suggest something else as that video card is like 4 generations old.

In short the answer is no for $700,

Have a look on e-bay for core components second hand and see what average price they go for.  Always a slight risk but there are bargains to be had when people like Gman have to have the latest and greatest and start pulling out stuff selling it cheap.     :D

I've built a second PC with mainly new and old parts for £500  but it will kick the nuts out of AH for years to come I5 6600, 8xgig ram, 6gb 1060, 240gb SSD and Windows 10 pro activated for £8 too.    :bolt:  Nearly matches my 1.5 year old system and I paid more like £800 for it.

Looks Good, should play nice. :) I have a GTX1080 and i-7 4790K clocked at 4.6Ghz. And a 27in 2k monitor with Nvidia G-Sync, so I get like 60-200+ FPS with all graphics on full almost.
