When a component goes end of sale and is no longer an actively 'built' component then it becomes more of a spare part, as that part becomes scarce the price goes up. Happens a lot with CPUs and RAM.

Funny coincidence! While waiting for the bus to Slumberland I was thinking about the life cycle of a component: Expensive novelty> "normal" priced standard> cheap outlet bulk> expensive spare part. Applies to most anything.
