Tesla Model 3 Performance Vs Mclaren 570s
« on: March 02, 2019, 09:02:22 PM »
The Mclaren clearly won in the quarter mile, but it was a close race.  It was a staggered start where the Mclaren got the green light second. Not a bad display of acceleration from a 4 door 5 seat family car. The future has arrived.

Next year the Tesla Roadster comes out. It will be a super car.

Definitely in my garage.  Not the P model but the base or base plus, probably June sometime.

LOL not in my garage.

Ditto.  Too many limitations to make it viable for a daily driver, for me.

Meh.  The acceleration may be awesome, but doesn't seem like a whole lot fun.  No manual transmission.  No mechanical symphony.  No thanks.

Isn't that in the mode where it hurts the battery and engine life, and if you use it more than x times it voids the warranty?

Engine sound is a BIG part of my love for cars.
Electric motors just don't cut it.

Ditto.  Too many limitations to make it viable for a daily driver, for me.

I had an electrician install a wall connector in my garage. I can charge the car after 11pm when the lowest electrical rates are available(12.7 cents per Kilowatt). If the battery is really low the cost to charge it is less than 10 dollars (U.S.). Electricity might be less expensive in your community. Charging time at home is usually around 3 hours. My connector puts out 48 amps. If you are able to get 100 amps out of your connector your charging time will be close to half of mine. You can get up to 310 miles to a charge if you order their largest battery. The next update will increase that to 325 miles.

When I charge at a Tesla Supercharger it is roughly the same price.

There are also lots of apps you can add to your smart phone that tell you where you can charge your car in the event their is not a Tesla charger around.  Lot of chargers (ie. PlugShare App) in my community are free. The free chargers are usually 30 amps/ 220v and if you are there for an hour or two you can add 40 to 80 miles to your battery while you are shopping or eating at a restaurant. The charging networks continue to grow and in the next couple months Tesla will release version 3 of their supercharger which should allow one to charge their car in 15 -25 min (currently 30-50 min) depending on how many are charging at one time.

EVGo offers fast charging. Their rates are similar to home charging and Teslas supercharging network. I know lots of people who regularly take trips in their Tesla. It has become as easy as filling up with gasoline and in the future will be just a fast.

Aside from being way less expensive than gas or diesel, there is no maintenance of any kind. No oil changes, oil filter, transmission fluid (no transmission) and that makes it much cheaper to operate. You don't have to smell gas or diesel anymore when you "fill up."

...................

To answer Vulcan's question: Currently the car has two modes: Chill and Sport. There is no mention of any warranty issues in the Owners Manual.
There will be an update coming out soon called Track Mode. That will increase performance and I would guess there will be warranty issues brought up when it is released.

...................

I have a diesel truck and I do not miss that engine sound one bit. It is nice to go down the freeway and have a conversation where no one has to talk loud to be heard. There is no reason to play the stereo loud either. The only sound I ever hear are the tires at high speed when on the freeway.

Mano I hope you like the car, some QC issues I have heard of but I really like the idea of electric cars.   :aok

To all the naysayers, look around you see a gas station at every corner, just like we used to see a phone booth......

Where I live if you have an EV you get free charging and free parking in all downtown parking lots.Sure there are only so many charging stations in each lot but thats just a simple matter of demand.

Funny, you can now charge your phone without plugging it in,even have phone to phone wireless charging.... how long before that tech reaches cars? It's already here, atleast in prototype testing.

As for sound...hmm I  plan to sell sound packs, make your car sound like a V12 merlin....... :x :x :devil  Then tomorrow it will sound like an F18 or maybe an old ford side oiler.....

Most people thing EV's are new but the fact is they have been around as long as the car has,was a time when EV's were very common but all the money was in petrol power.

What i see coming is the death of sports cars, since even the dullest blob of a commuter car will be a rocket ship.  Great for daily driving but when every car on the road is super fast, what is there in the car world to look forward to?

It'll be a decade before any non-Tesla car manufacturer releases a sub-5.0 0 to 60 mass-market EV in quantities that mean anything.

Also: https://twitter.com/BoildownAH/status/1084932754008100864

The real Tesla advantage is the supercharger network. No one's EV but Tesla's can realistically do a cross-country drive.  And despite the Electrify America thing, no one else shows any sign of competing either. The soonest will be in Europe, and then China, but in the US they will continue to drag their feet on a competing supercharger network outside of California until Tesla has an insurmountable advantage. And I more tentatively predict that the domestic car manufacturers will just fold and pay Tesla to let their own EVs use the Tesla charger network.

Now, where are all the people on these forums who claimed the electrical grid is going to fail if EVs have widespread adoption?  Time to start eating your crow.

First mechanical piece of equipment I have ever heard of that was maintenance free. Does it come with a free unicorn?  :D

Here you go Mano, this is a COPO Camaro with its gasoline engine removed and replaced with a new General Motors electric crate motor.  This is something they are working on so that soon you will be able to swap any GM car over to electric.  This car still has an HT400 automatic transmission, driveline and rear end.  Only the engine and gas tank have been removed and replaced with a motor and batteries.
