I know what you mean.  I had tried on an off again for years before getting really serious.  The funny thing is, it was working and you didn't realize it.  It is designed that you fail, sorta.  Over and over and over.  That is the exercise.  Most people don't realize at first that is the feature not the bug.

You concentrate on your breathing, your mind wanders (it always will), you realize and catch it, let go of the intruding thought, and bring it back to the breathing.  Over again.  Thousands of times. Like bicep curls.  Your mind wandering isn't failure, it is the exercise.  And every iteration, you are building mental muscle.  Well, maybe 3 muscles.

1.  The self-awareness to recognize an undesired pattern of thought the instant it arises instead of being lost in it.
2.  The ability to let the undesired thought go and let it fade. Learning that it will fade if you let it go.
3.  The ability to bring the mind back to the desired state or concentration.

What's the point? One day you might be going about your life and someone will say something that pisses you off.  Maybe that sets off a whole cascade of thoughts and anger and memories of past bad things that really aren't connected, but now you are on a roll...

then you exercise skill 1, realize you are falling into a negative pattern before it goes too far or you say or do something that just causes more suffering,
then you exercise skill 2, you simply let the negative thoughts go.  Hard to do sometimes.  Takes practice.
then you exercise skill 3, bring your mind back to some productive mode, what you were already doing, perhaps a more productive response, or just let it drift and focus on some more positive thought.

Oh well, if you ever have the desire to give it another try, I'd be happy to talk to you about it privately.

Yeah, finding as many things as you can that bring joy helps.  When I recently got my scooter and learned to ride, I noticed a measurable uptick in serotonin production.  :D

:salute

the negative thoughts...yup those are the hardest to get rid of, I try to explain it to people and the best way for them to actually visualize, is imagine a room...4 walls...but all walls ceiling and floor are mirrors....and someone standing in the middle with a jack hammer....each Jack hammer seen in the mirrors are my negative thoughts....negative thoughts about everything and everyone.....

that is my head and has been for most my life....

I have been thinking about getting a bike.... gonna be 50 this year, figure I should start before it is to late.

It's never too late to get up on two wheels.

I'm hitting double-nickel this year.   :D

Of course my 300cc Vespa isn't exactly Hell's Angels material.  I don't go on free-ways.  I stick to residential, secondary, and back highways.

Hmmmm evening riding weather is coming.  Long twighlight.  Get home, grab a quick bite, load up a long complex route on the gps, select a Pandora station and head out once traffic starts dying down.  Take a 2 hour relaxing evening ride listening to tunes.  You'll sleep like a baby.    :aok

although many years ago I did have a 69 Triumph Bonneville 500... :o crashed it first outing...forgot everything is reversed...so figured that was a sign....so I got my old 73 340 Challenger....

but I do think it is time...no way near as crazy and reckless as I used to be, and maybe that is just what I need.

although...if money was no issue...I would get the new Challenger Demon...but dont think I would ever stop driving it....friggen car is insane.

ink nobody has ever gotten better by doing it for somebody else.  they only got better by doing it for himself/herself.

forget about your wife, it ain't gonna happen and if you keep fantasying about it, it's just gonna make bitterer.  not saying you shouldn't talk to get, she's your kids mom.  but sweeping her off her feet again it's well just a fantasy.

you should concentrate on you and only you.  how you go about that?  I don't know. it's something you will need to find out on your own. but talking about it it's a start. talk about it till your friends tell you they're sick and tired of it. then find somebody else to talk about it. till that day you find out it's not that important.

heal yourself for your own sake.  then your children will see a different person. but do it for you first and they will get all the benefits.

If a therapist wanted a tattoo should he do it himself?

I'm glad the kids are OK and Ink is back.

Vespas used to be trendy, here on campus back in the day. You might still see one occasionally. Now it's more the pocket/mini ninja:

(ok - this image is just a bit extreme - but not by too much)

They travel in packs, beeping at the girl joggers and revving their toy engines. I find it amusing.

The campus is really covered in:

Which is also creating a steady increase in:

I'd like get a vintage scooter someday.  Maybe not as my main ride but something fun to play with now and then.

There is a guy in town that does beautiful restoration work on vintage 1940,50,60 scooters.  I bet those aren't cheap.

I truely love my GTV, but if I was doing it again, I'd be very tempted to go for the Sei Giorni instead:
