Fw 190A-5 Desert Scheme
« on: April 07, 2019, 04:39:57 PM »
109A-5 flown by Erich Rudorffer of 6./Jg 2  in February 1943. II/Jg 2 was deployed with their 190's to Tunisia in November 1942 to help counter the Allied push into Tunisia from Algeria and Libya. Rudorffer would score 8 victories with this plane on February 9 and another 7 victories on the 15th. His total in Tunisia was 27.

Rudorffer was no stranger to air combat by this point, having attained 45 victories before the Tunisian campaign. The first being a French Curtiss Hawk 75 in 1940. After the Tunisian Campaign concluded, Rudorffer would be transferred to the eastern front to take command of II/Jg 54 in June 1943. There he would claim another 138 victories by the end of 1944. In January 1945, Rudorffer was transferred to I/Jg 7 to fly the Me 262, where he would score his final 12 victories. He would survive the war as history's 7th highest scoring pilot with a total of 224 victories.

This skin is an adoption of Piterko's original and corrects a number of inaccuracies with the original skin. The most notable changes are that the original skin had larger areas of dark green paint and white bands on the wings. Neither of these traits is seen in the reference photo I have of the real plane. Instead, this plane was originally in standard day fighter grays with a heavy coat of desert sand sprayed over without masking insignias. The yellow plane number and bar were newly painted as were the white African theater tail band and lower wing tips.
