OK here goes.....
Lets say you are building a "hawaii" terrain.
1) COPY the /terrains/blank/ directory and rename it to the terrain you are gonna build.
i.e. You would then have a /terrains/hawaii/
directory.
( if you are using Ogre's Mapmaker this is where you would copy the .typ and .elv files that Mapmaker generated, into the "hawaii" directory. Rename them to hawaii.typ and hawaii.elv. Overwrite the existing .typ and .elv files)
2) start the editor and hit "set terrain". Enter the name hawaii and exit the editor WITHOUT SAVING.
OR
Edit the curterr file to contain the name of the terrain (i.e. hawaii).
THIS IS MUCH EASIER AND SAFER 3) Start the editor and make your terrain.
Put autosave on if you like.
4) Create the clipboard map.
(SEE BELOW)
5) "Build" the terrain.
This will generate a .res file with the map and terrain compiled in it.
6) Select this terrain in "setup" to enable you to fly in it offline.
Note:
When you use the "set terrain" function,
it creates a new folder for the terrain with default settings AND POSSIBLY OVERWRITES THE EXISTING ONE.
In other words, you "set terrain" , THEN create it If you have a few terrains on-the-build at the same time, don't use "set terrain".
Just edit the "currterr" file to the terrain you want to edit and then launch the editor.

Taken from another post by "Rodney" and "10Bears"
(1) take a birds-eye image of your terrain from nice and high up with the screen shot button (Shift-S??)
OR or use your terr.bmp which in in editor dir.
(2) open the following file:
HTC\aheditor\terrains\maps\mapxxx.bmp where xxx = the size of your map.
E.g. map64.bmp is for a 64x64 size map.
(3) Place a copy of that file in the directory that your new terrain is in.
e.g. terrains\hawaii\map64.bmp
(4) Cut and Paste the image of your terrain into the map file that you created in the terrain directory.
If your paint program has transparency use that to get the grid lines in the map.
(5) Now the tricky part : You need to cut the mapxxx.bmp file into 4 quarters.
Each quarter should measure 256x256 pixels.
Your graphics program has rulers use em'.
Name the quarter's in the following way:
Top Left quarter -> map0.bmp
Top Right quarter -> map1.bmp
Bottom Left quarter -> map2.bmp
Bottom Right quarter -> map3.bmp
(6) copy those four files into your new terrains' directory.
e.g. terrains\hawaii\map0.bmp etc
Your map256 or whatever you used, should also be included in this dir
NOTE:
The terr.bmp file mentioned in (#1) is created by the editor and is a "snapshot" of terrain that you edited last.
Hope this helps.
