In April 1942 the Royal Australian Air Force's 22 Squadron were equipped with some A-20 bombers originally intended for the now-overrun Dutch Air Force. From October these were employed on low level attacks on Japanese positions in New Guinea. The squadron soon adapted their bombers for the role, fitting nose guns in the bomb aimer's position for ground straffing. The original Dutch aircraft were gradually supplemented with ex-USAAF machines and in June 1944 some brand new A-20Gs. The squadron CO's aircraft featured a Vargas pin-up as noseart and was called "Hilda Shane" after his wife and son.
