Luftwaffe historians/dweebs
« on: August 28, 2019, 12:43:35 PM »
Looking for attack/jabo sortie/misson details for August 29th/August 30th 1944 in the Champagne-Chalons area of France.

Any good resources out there for missions like these?

There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Yes. I am tracing my grandfathers path through France and Germany with the 80th Infantry Division and his battalions AARs say they were strafed both days by Luftwaffe fighters. The Battalions AAA claimed they saw hits/damage but none shot down. Was hoping to see what Luftwaffe units they were.

I see. Those sorts of late war Luftwaffe diaries are extremely rare. However, I can tell you that II/JG 3 and III/JG 76 were based outside of Châlons-en-Champagne until the Allies captured it around the same day you mention. The airfield in question was officially captured by the Allies on September 4.

Uncertain on the JG 3 claim, actually.

Thanks Perdweeb, his battalion would forge the Marne tomorrow around 1100AM and later that evening would be attacked by German fighters, then again on the 30th. What was III/JG76 flying at the time? Fw 190s?

Mix of late G-6's and G-14 proper. I cannot say for certain that was the unit, but they were close at the time. Because most of JG 76 was based at Azannes, the pieces of III/JG 76 that was stationed here on the Marne likely retreated there before ultimately retreating to Germany like the rest of the Luftwaffe.
