B-29 quick video tutorial to get in the air

Here is a really quick tutorial (about 4 minutes) detailing what needs to happen for you to get B-29's in the air,

Nice! You make it look easy.

Wouldn't it be better to keep the flaps up until the end of the runway to reduce drag?

Try holding the brakes until the engines spin up,I do this with the 262 also.

  YMMV.

Yeah that's what I do. I do that in almost all aircraft that I fly.

 :airplane:  Good Advice   :aok

Just remember once you're up there watch your speed on descent. I have ripped off many a wing not paying attention trying to land.
I always wanted to fight an impossible battle against incredible odds.

Yeah, landing this aircraft is interesting. You've really got to pay attention to your IAS and learn how to use your flaps, Throttle, RPM and angle of descent to keep this pig at around 180 IAS and 130 IAS on final with a touch down speed of roughly 120 IAS in case you have to touch and go to attempt the landing again.

Never try to force this aircraft, monitor your speed and work your flaps and make her want to sit down on the runway.

Your angle of descent, called the glide slope, does affect your speed but what you're doing for speed control is managing the angle of attack, near the critical stall angle, to utilize the high drag created by high AOA. This lets you use thrust for altitude control, and AOA for speed control. Not nit picking, just explaining it for anyone interested.  :aok

This was one of the concepts that made Wolfgang Langewiesche so famous.  Elevator controls airspeed, throttle controls altitude.  Just the opposite of what instructors were teaching even into the 1960s.  He did something similar with ailerons and rudder:  Aileron turns the plane, rudder balances the turn.  I remember letters to the editor of Flying magazine, disbelieving that as late as 1962 ("We were taught to turn with the rudder.  It's always worked for me!").

Stick and Rudder is a great easy to read book for virtual pilots in a dynamic flight simulator.   :aok

I'm guessing the point of rudder turns was avoiding adverse yaw.

Rudder turns work but coordinated turns are faster.

Best way to train taking off with B-29s is using the SFMA2016 terrain in offline mode.  Head over to A44 and launch with an east takeoff.  It's a small airfield with a descending terrain once airborne.  Your drones will catch up quickly when the ground sharply decreases from your slow lifting airframes.
Chuck Norris can pick oranges from an apple tree and make the best lemonade in the world. Every morning when you wake up, swallow a live toad. Nothing worse can happen to you for the rest of the day. They say money can't buy happiness. I would like the opportunity to find out. Why be serious?

learning how to get these brutes off the ground where there is minimal to no terrain drop at the end of the runway is key. Not all fields in your area will have that nice geo feature.
