Look! No Hands
« on: January 15, 2020, 07:57:02 AM »
Thanks to Lyric1 for finding me the info for this skin, which was requested by LNG15.

This P-47D named 'Look! No Hands' was the personal aircraft of Col. Chester L. Van Etten, CO of the 509th Fighter Squadron. This squadron formed part of the 9th Air Force's 405th Fighter Group and was tasked with providing air support to the US Army during its advance across Northern Europe in 1944 and 1945. The squadron notably destroyed an entire German Panzer Division on July 29th 1944, knocking out the front and rear elements of a three mile long column before systematically destroying the rest during the day. During the Battle of the Bulge its support of the US 3rd Army's advance on Bastogne so impressed General Patton he personally awarded the entire squadron a DFC.

Great job and interesting story to go with it.

Also, are there any more D-25 slots open? I thought it was full.

Thanks guys, glad you like it.

Excluding this skin there are currently ten D-25 slots available. Of the five Thunderbolt sub-types in AH only the D-11 is unavailable for new skins, the rest have plenty of slots left.

We have one from this group a different squadron though with similar markings.

That's a shame.

So much room for updated skins that will probably never be updated with new spec maps. Hitech should allow you and others to go in and fix the maps at least.

Otherwise, nice jug Greebo.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Nice info on "The Jawbone" Lyric1, will put that in my possible future skins pile.

I don't we'll ever see the old skins cleared out from the D-11, or from the P-51s for that matter. Letting it stagnate avoids all the BBS drama that we'd likely get from the few players whose favourite skin had been dropped.

That's why I said HT should give you guys the privs to at least update the spec maps. Leaving the skins the way they are gives a bad impression to new players trying out skins for the first time.

Unfortunately there are practical difficulties with having skinners change files in other players' skins. Also there are hundreds of skins that would have to be redone. Personally I would like that when the game sees that the player's chosen skin lacks bump and spec maps it could then automatically substitute some default blank bump and spec map files or lighting values to make the skin look reasonable. You'd get no bumps and no lighting changes like on a modern skin but it would at least look as good as in the early AH2 era when it was skinned, not the chrome finish we have now in AH3.

This has been asked for previously.  I volunteered to do all of them but was told the only way to "fix" them is to adopt them.  That means the original skinner loses credit for it even if all you've changed are the spec maps.

Blank default maps would be ideal but apparently are massively time consuming so we get the SuperShine-and-Warts (tm) look.  :(
