Looking to make a comeback...
« on: June 15, 2020, 06:02:30 PM »
So its been about 10 years since I stopped playing. My call sign was Shortbus. I would like to start playing again, but I have a few questions. How is community size? We used to get about 3-400 on Friday/Saturday night. How is the game play? About a year ago, a buddy that used to fly with us gave it a try again and said if felt "arcadish". Is it still mostly like a sim where you need to know about your plane and have a good knowledge of ACM?

Game is downloaded and installed. I will be breaking out the flight stuff in a few hours after my officers meeting. Thanks for any replies and <S>. I look forward to seeing you in the skies.

Well, hi Shortbus. :) Smaller. Opinions vary. It's not an arcade game. Yes.

Welcome back Gary. Sure, its a cartoon sim. But it is certainly not " arcadish". Flight modeling in most of the planes is as near to the real thing as one can get for this kind of money. And there's the commeradery.  Looking forward to seeing you in the friendly virtual skies.

if your old call-sign is not available simply call them on the phone and they will fix it for you.  Central time.

Why would anyone use the call sign "NotAvailable"?   :D

I came back after ten years also. Still got the score padders, strat porkers, grammar nazi's, HO n Go'ers, and dr7 is still playing except I have seen him in a plane recently in which I asked him had hell froze over. The game play is still arcade style in my opinion. I just purchased the P-47 in DCS World and I was woken up to what a flight sim was when I finally took off and the plane flopped over because I wasn't compensating for the engine torque.

There's some OG players still in AH and some new OG players in Aces High. All are generally cool people.

So there should be no difference from when you stopped playing.

The telework and stay-at-home orders were a good reason to pick up AH again, and I also re-joined after about 8-10 yrs away. It's been great fun! Echo Darkwood's comments above, it's about what you expect from previous. The added plane models are fun. I do think that there could be a little fresher gameplay for the MA. The Special Events are really fun, and I wish I could participate in all of them, just not enough time :-)

Precisely why I'll never bother with DCS.

It will do the same thing in Aces High if you take of manually.  If we didn't have auto takeoff then many new players would never have a chance to learn about engine torque.

You had to purchase the P-47?  We are definitely getting the better deal.

I really hate that word torque as it relates to flight sims.

Most people confuse it with the forces of Pfactor, vortex or gyroscopic . And real engine torque is not the force that would flip a plane on its back . That would be do to a snap roll created by an asymmetric stall do to vortex and slip conditions do to lack of rudder input.
