Well, after months of frustration with this I finally just reinstalled windows 10. 

I thought for sure that would fix it, reinstaled this afternoon,  first thing I do after the fresh install is try to start downloading some of the programs that got wiped in the reinstall, and...

NOPE!  Still has the same issue.

currently getting >400kbps on this PC on speedtest.  Ran the same test on the same wifi on my phone and get over 10-15mbps

I think I'll post over on that speedguide.net forum Drane recommended.  This is just crazy, seems now like it must be a hardware issue, but I just don't get that.

yup, sounds like a crappy network card to me.

They are pretty cheap, just throw another one in. Do they have a Walmart up there where you are?

Already tried that. 

I've tried plugging into the motherboard ethernet port, also tried plugging into a PCI ethernet card, and connecting using a USB wifi reciever.  All methods have the same issue.

And again, everything worked fine with windows 7

Testing with another computer would be the next step.

Or, if you don't have access to one, booting from a live Linux USB stick would also eliminate any Win10 related issues.

An extreme approach would be to reinstall Win7 to check if that still works, rather on a spare disk than wiping your current OS disk.

You could check on your computer motherboard's support page to see if there are updated drivers for windows 10 (presumably 64 bit) for your networking devices.  Since you updated from Windows 7, there may or may not be different drivers.

Well...  I've come to the determination that this must be some kind of hardware compatibility or fault issue.  I re-flashed the BIOS that made no change, so finally in desperation I did a full format and install of windows 10, and am still facing the same issue.

Just to be sure I wasn't crazy I dug out an old laptop running Win 7 and ran pingplotter on it simultaneously with the problem desktop.

Here is the results form the old Win 7 laptop;

Also ignore the time stamp on the laptop one, I didn't set the time on it, these where run at the exact same time, both on the same wifi.  Also it makes 0 difference if I plug into ethernet instead of wifi.


I suppose I'm going to start looking for a christmas deal on a new MB, CPU and RAM.  MSI says this MB is fine with Win 10, but something in my system is obviously not happy with it.

nevermind below, I didnt read your post all the way through. but 90% PL on the first hop to the router looks like your motherboard is hosed.




Are you using the same ethernet cable on both the laptop and desktop? If not, swap the cable. Also try a different port on the router in case the port is hosed.

If no good, buy a PCIe gigabit ethernet adapter and install it in the desktop and use that instead of the onboard. Could be a bad port on the motherboard

I've tried all that months ago.  No difference.  I've connected with several different ethernet cables to both the MB and a PCIe adapter, and tried wifi with both a PCIe adapter and a USB adapter.  Nothing changes.

From my original post months ago.

"-Updated drivers on network controllers
-Updated drivers on motherboard
-reset modem
-Turn all power saving settings to performance
-turned off any startup programs/clean boot
-turned off windows defender
-changed from automatic to manual IP address and DNS and back again
-using command prompt ran a bunch of netsh and ipconfig commands to reset winsock, and flush dns and release and renew IP config
-uninstalled and reinstalled network controllers from device manager
-tried a brand new ethernet cable, and a new mini USB wifi adapter.
-tried a new PCI ethernet card instead of the motherboard one."

Add to that list now, I have tried a reinstall of Win 10 without formatting, BIOS re-flash and now a complete format and reinstall of Win 10.

It seems that way, but what I don't get is it worked fine on Win 7.  There is a 10 day window to "roll back" to 7 after the update to 10, and I tried that early on, and had no issues with 7, back to 10 and it sucks.  Now it is way past to window to roll back to 7 so I have no way to go back to 7 unless I buy a disc.

But i can't use my Rift on 7 anyway, which was the only reason I upgraded in the first place.

It sure seems like this MB hates Win 10, but MSI has Win 10 drivers on their website (they didn't fix anything)

Hmmm. Working fine on 7 instead of 10 almost sounds like windows 10 trashed the motherboard. I dont think there is a way to have the drivers still think they are in a windows 7 environment. If you plan on keeping the PC for a long time, you could always get an OEM copy of windows 7 with an OEM key and reinstall windows 7. This computer is running an OEM windows 7 Pro SP1, dvd and key was I think $35 on ebay. It is 100% legit on the key and activated through microshaft flawlessly.

What does doing a search with your motherboard name/type with keywords windows 10 network faults bring up?

I guess there are absolutely no win7 drivers for the rift?

Simplest may be to possibly look for a barebones motherboard combo system for windows 10 that will meet your hardware requirements, or transfer hardware to it then may have to fight reactivating it due to all the hardware changes

Sorry if I post something you may of tried, but im shooting in the dark


On Windows, go to "Device Manager>Network adapters>*your network adapter*>Properties>Advanced"
-Set both "Channel Width for 2.4GHz" and "Channel Width for 5GHz" from "Auto" to "20 MHz Only"


Go to task manager and performance. Might be a wifi tab to give info. One post said stresses on GPU or CPU caused issues with the wifi as seen in the pic


Does it have ethernet controller/drivers by Killer Network Software? (Start > Search > Killer). That seems to cause high packet loss for some people

Just a thought....

My youngest daughter in Florida called me up several months back telling me a similar situation to yours saggs...

She even said said there was an unknown network and that her dl was slow less than 100 Kb....

I while video chatting with her to right-click the unknown network she was seeing and open it to show what it was doing/reporting

That unknown network was eating all her bandwidth running nearly 150 Mbps in the back ground

I told her someone had either high jacked her router or Lan on her computer and told her to immediately kill that unknown network...

When I had built her gaming computer for her I had also included a WiFi USB dongle,  so asked her to switch to wireless access and it worked fine

Told her to report it to Comcast and after that told her to uninstall her Lan drivers etc,  do some ESET security sweeping and stuff.... took nearly 3 months worth of talking video to fix her windows 10 machine......

Comcast changed out her router and changed her ip address per my request... so I  knew I was down to just dealing with the pc and OS
