Yeah.  It's so popular you have to go search for them.

 :rofl

 :headscratch:

When anyone is looking for an alternative it will have need to be searched for. Uhhh kind of assumed in part of the definition of alternative...

A book recommendation for our times, also available as an audio book:

The Mandibles, by Shriver.

The classic 1984 is how things go horribly wrong with authoritarian power using an iron fist for control.  Brave New World is similar but there is a velvet glove over the fist, and the authoritarian power uses entertainment, drugs, and class manipulation to make the masses happy about the situation.

The Mandibles is even closer to more things that are happening today.  A great book for today's world.

easy to read a book and see how things are similar to what is happening now.

I'm watching revenge of the sith, lots of things similar to what is happening right now.

but is it true?

I trust in logic.

Deductive reasoning.

Who benefits? Follow the money.

Motive, Means and Opportunity are the basis for all lucid assumptions and conclusions on all topics great and small to those who dare apply this Vulcan philosophy to everything.

Belief is the death of logic and if you think your belief gives you strength and all who disagree are heretics just know that heresy means free thought and most of our ancestors learned that their odds of not being burned alive increased if they believed what everyone else believed and the accuracy and legitimacy of that belief was, is and has always been irrelevant to all who view the truth as being inconsequential and dangerous.

The great Holmesian axiom of “When you eliminate all other contingencies, what remains no matter how improbable must be the truth.” applies in modern times as it did then because there is nothing new under the sun and there is a sucker born every minute looking for someone to blame for their easily manipulated naive incompetence.

Having the humility and self awareness to admit to yourself you have been and can be fooled again and to be wary of all things presented to you as incontrovertible facts by the high priests of the religion of expertology who deserve extra scrutiny and suspicion by default in the new normal because their true loyalties have always been to themselves and those who pay them. Not you.

After all wisdom is simply the journey from presumptuous ignorance to thoughtful uncertainty.

As for Lucas and Tolkien and other story tellers that create fantasy worlds with diabolical villains capable of unimaginable cunning and manipulation... They said their stories are just fantasy and not allegory at least in public. In private they may have said something completely different.

To think. This was argued thousands of years ago, and how many times over...

I like that..."there is a sucker born every minute looking for someone to blame for their easily manipulated naive incompetence."  With that a curse and also opportunity.  A fascinating existence.

"Having the humility and self awareness to admit to yourself you have been and can be fooled again and to be wary of all things presented to you as incontrovertible facts by the high priests of the religion of expertology..."
Enjoyable read. :)  :aok

When I was a kid stupid was the exception.

If you were young and you did something stupid an older person might call you out on it and ask you if you were stupid.

Stupid now seems to be the norm and not the exception...

reminds of a quote from a smart guy.

only two kinds of people those who think I'm smart and those who make look smart.  never met a person who thinks I'm smart.
