Identify this aircraft?
« on: January 03, 2021, 09:37:56 PM »
B-25? B-24?

Could these be members of the 618th BS?

There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Looks like the rear gunner position on a late model B-24.  It is a turret which means it is not a 17, 25 or 26.

The 416 was part of the 477th BG and flew B-26s in '43 and then B-25s. So, not one of their a/c.

Thanks, a friend of mine scanned in some photos of a local colored family from my home town.

Curious if these may be men from the Tuskegee units in Italy during WW2.

I agree with Fencer. Looks like the tail turret on a B-24. It's pretty distinctive as not many planes had that particular turret. Looks like the horizontal stab above and behind them so, guessing it's the tail. Some of the RAF bombers had a similar style turret.

Godman Army Airfield (Ft Knox) was a base for the 618th.

that it's close but I dont think that it.  rivets above the mag on the right match and 2 on the side, but the plexiglass or whatever you call it dont match.  the angle on the mg is about the same but rivets on plexiglass are different.

semp

edit: the 3 rivets on the mg match the picture but the 3 rivets also mark the angle of the downward part of the turret which doesnt match the picture.

I think the plexiglass is not shown in Nef's photo. Seems to match the lower portion of the turret pretty well.

Angle in relation to what?

Those rivets even match their positions relative to the gun barrels. Two directly above the barrel and one outboard.

And in some of the pics it looks like that main glass is armor glass not just plexi. Seems kinda thick anyway. I think I remembered reading some of the RAF tail gunners flying at night actually took that pane out for better visibility.
