Most of us know that pain.  I saved this from one of the old (1970s?) American Rifleman magazines:

WHERE TO BURY A DOG

   A subscriber of the Ontario Argus has written to the editor asking, “Where shall I bury my dog?”  It is asked in advance of death.

   We would say to the Ontario man that there are various places in which a dog may be buried.  We are thinking now of a setter, whose coat was flame in the sunshine, and who, so far as we are aware, never entertained a mean or an unworthy thought.  This setter is buried beneath a cherry tree, under four feet of garden loam, and at its proper season the cherry strews petals on the green lawn of his grave.  Beneath a cherry tree, or an apple, or any flowering shrub of the garden, is an excellent place to bury a good dog.  Beneath such trees, such shrubs, he slept in the drowsy summer, or gnawed at a flavorous bone, or lifted head to challenge some strange intruder.  These are good places, in life or in death.  Yet it is a small matter.  For if the dog be well remembered, if sometimes he leaps through your dreams actual as in life, eyes kindling, laughing, begging, it matters not at all where that dog sleeps.  On a hill where the wind is unrebuked, and the trees are roaring, or beside a stream he knew in puppyhood, or somewhere in the flatness of a pasture land, where most exhilarating cattle graze.  It is all one to the dog, and all one to you, and nothing is gained, and nothing lost – if memory lives.  But there is one best place to bury a dog.

   If you bury him in this spot, he will come to you when you call – come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down the well-remembered path, and to your side again.  And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel they shall not growl at him, nor resent his coming, for he belongs there.  People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper, people who may never really have had a dog.  Smile at them, for you shall know something that is hidden from them, and which is well worth the knowing.  The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of his master.

a 17 yr old cat named Chum (short for Chumbucket)... he was born on a Coast Guard cutter
and the first 6mos of his life at sea
After that he came to us where he lived happily ever after

Praying it helps him a lot. Maybe colder weather is playing a role too.

My in laws give their older dogs half a baby aspirin. Makes a huge difference.

The old Lady is on me to get a companion dog for our Shepard. Thing is everyone says they will take care of it but I seem to be the one doing everything with the dogs. I'd love a little bichon pup or something like it but I'm not getting any younger.

My GSD it my masterpiece. Im very proud of how he's responded to training and people are very impressed with him and his intelligence. They really are amazing creatures. People ask me what my secret is and its all very easy. Repetition, discipline, and positive reinforcement. Show a dog love and he'll jump in front of a bullet for you.

Will be 12 y/o in May. He is the one I’m trying out the Synovi G 4 with. Doesn’t seem to be making any difference in his hips and gait yet, but it’s only day 5...

4 yrs ago I bought my wife her first dog, ever. A pup that is half corgi, half mini australian shepherd. She's leaner than a true corgi, with lots of grit. Once at the petco store a friendly german shepherd got too close for our dog's comfort. She stood her ground, and looking up at this giant of a dog, she bared her teeth and uttered a menacing low growl (for a corgi). The owners of the GS busted out laughing, but the GS backed away.

We have a mini-poodle/border collie cross. She's a mental case, she will often see off GS or Labs.

I have never had a pet before in my life.  we were poor growing up and if we had a dog we would probably ate it.  neighbor's dog had puppies and they would go under the fence and come over to our yard.  used to take them back till one time she wasnt home and I put both of them on my desk, the female just crawled up on my arm slowly as I was playing ah and got on my shoulder and fell asleep there.  the male was a biter so i just ended up with the female.

that's how I ended up with my dog 5 years ago.  she's a lot of fun, I pretend to slap her on the face and she pretends to bite me, she holds my hand between her teeth but she wont bite down.  if I dont let her put my hand between her teeth she gets off the sofa and stands 2 feet away and wont look at me.  then I'll call her and she starts barking and growling and I let her put my hand between her teeth.

another thing she does when she's sitting in the sofa with my wife is that I turn around and pretend to pull my shorts/pants down.  she starts barking and growling like a killer and tries to bite my butt, as soon as I pull them up she stops.  it's hilarious as hell.

glad I have her, she's a mutt, some kind of poodle something.
