nVidia GT 1030 (for $80) is workable for AH
« on: January 13, 2021, 03:10:42 AM »
From time to time, I get a pal here or there set up to fly AH Scenarios with me.

For that purpose, I look for stuff that gives a good experience, but at the low end of price.

Today, I tried out an nVidia GT 1030 ($80).  It works just fine for this purpose.  I use default graphics settings, except that I turn on antialiasing and turn off shadows and reflections, and set the slider to "none".

With that, I get about 60 fps flying around.

Unless I am fully enveloped (i.e., zero viz) inside a cloud, in which case I go down to 35-45 fps or so.  Of course, frame rate doesn't matter all that much then.  Frame rate goes back up once I get some vis again.

I'm using 1080p, and a computer with an Intel i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz.  Also, DX11 version of AH.

I'm very happy about this.

the cheap version with slow DDR4 VRAM or the standard version with GDDR5 VRAM ?
GPU-Z should be able to tell you which one it is.

It's a GDDR5 version.  Costs about $80.

All the ones I see on Amazon and Newegg seem to have GDDR5.

So far, I'm quite happy with this for entry to AH.

Also checking "disable pilot mesh" increases frame rates.  I don't need the graphical pilot sitting there in the seat.

Well, the GT 1030 has increased by 10% in price in the past 2 weeks.
