Realistic Fun Flying
« on: April 03, 2021, 09:30:37 PM »

I will get “flamed” for this, but here goes:  Many years ago I flew in a Combat Flight Sim entitled, “Fighter Ace.”  I flew in what was called the “Realistic Arena.”  After several years flying in that arena Fighter Ace decided to disable enemy icons!  You could see the enemy aircraft on the map, and of course directly.  Back then (~1999) the graphics were no where near what they are today so enemy aircraft visual acquisition was tough as you might imagine.  The only advantage was that “Padlock Nearest Enemy” did just that.  It locked on to the closest enemy aircraft and remained so until you selected any other available view such as view forward.  I had to smile when I was flying south in a P-40 and hit F4 (padlock nearest enemy aircraft) and my view instantly spun to my headrest, or another time it spun 90 degrees left to a hill near which I was flying. The enemy was on the other side if that hill!

What initially seemed an impossible problem to overcome with the early graphics became quite fun.  I used to fly just above the ground and when the map showed that I was near an enemy aircraft I hit F4.  The enemy would always be above me. ;)

Still today in AH if you fly at 100’ generally all the enemy will be above you, and if you are fighting rooks that would start at 10,000’  :devil

The short answer is yes,but it's not quite the same as the way it worked in fighter ace. When FA shut down and we got several players come to AH I worked with a few and they asked about padlock,I showed them how to use the AH version and IIRC most said it wasnt the same.

Open map keys in clipboard, select views and look up the key press for padlock, not at my game machine and I cant remember the exact key presses.

AH padlock puts a sort of “box” around the icon of an enemy aircraft.  In Fighter Ace it caused one’s view to lock on to an enemy A/C regardless of it’s location relative to one’s own aircraft.

Frankly, it took me quite a while to learn to use it.  It meant that in team competition I served as a sort of home base defense team member.  When one of our team’s aircraft was damaged they could return to home base, land and their A/C would be repaired and then they could rejoin the fight.  Enemy A/C would often chase a damaged team mate’s A/C home.  Since I could not use padlock my responsibility was to intercept that enemy before he could shoot down one of my team mates who was returning for repair.  However, once I learned to use padlock it was great.

the paddock view is the tab key.

as for icons, in monday night madness, icons do not show until you're within 1k.

i did that for the old guys. years ago i kept them off, but with many requests, i turned them to 1k.

that seems to work for everyone. if you dont see a icon, assume its a bad guy.
