Need some advice
« on: April 22, 2021, 08:42:30 PM »
Since there are alot of old farts hanging around that know more than I, looking for advice.
I have a acquired an Asus M1188 A1. Which, my CH joystick and pedals need cleaning, plays game OKish with evrything nocked back.
I acquired a FirePro V4900 card, but puter has win 10 on it now...and card not supported.
 I'm going cheap. Have to.
Appears motherboard, AMD processor, has one PCI 16 slot.

 I need some ideas.

While I don't mind taking my lumps relearning. I need bit more FRs

 Thanks

Don't bother with the FirePro, it's way below the minimum requirements of AH so you won't gain anything.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

Just so you know...
With the unavailability of new video cards from normal retailers, and chips in general, about the only way to get a useful video card is to buy a prebuilt PC, at least in the US. If that's an option for you, some of these guys might know of something in your budget. Don't buy anything without check the specs in here.  :old:

Easy in-game again.

If you need a video card that doesn't require extra power outside the pci-e slot, an Nvidia GTX 1050Ti is probably the fastest card. Plenty good for AH with a tad lowered settings and was not too expensive even as new.

Thanks Bizman, after some research with my newly acquired experience[read: I'll not do that again]...it's that or 750. I have thought of rewinding to Win 7 , than the drivers for v4900 should work.
Some, like myself, have no choice but to 'do this' on the cheap.
And we keep coming back for more....
Maybe there's something special about this 'game'.

JGroth, I fully understand your low budget issues. Actually, one of the reasons I started to study PC's was to find ways to be able to play games on the mediocre computer I could afford. Even my current rig is a low budget one, just a year newer than yours. I've paid about 350 for it, partially paying the upgrades by selling the weaker parts.

If by 750 you mean an Nvidia GTX750, that's a good start. Not stellar but playable with the settings all down.

The FirePro V4900 really falls way, way below minimum requirements no matter what your OS is. By benchmarks it scores roughly similar to the integrated one you're using now, or worse. A GTX750 scores over triple of those.

As a reminder, on Nvidia cards the hundreds tell the generation and the tens the power. GTX #50 are entry level gamers and basically the next generation #50 is on par with the previous #60. Same goes for higher tens. Thus a 1050 equals a 960 which equals 770 (800 series were for laptops only and were based on the 700's). Note that the "higher tens" cards require a power cable from your power supply!

The CPU you have there is going to be a bottleneck with anything above a geforce GTX 1050 ti as previously advised and as for amd perhaps a rx560 or rx550 would be best.

You probably will achieve 60 fps solid at 1080p with the GPU upgrade.

Right now I would suspect you need to play at 720p with almost everything off and sliders all left to achieve 60 frames per second which is really the minimum. Dips into the 40s or 50s acceptable.

I suspect a gt 1030 with ddr5 ram could be a very cheap option if your willing to sacrifice graphics and looks for more fps. It also requires hardly any power but is not as good as a 1050 ti.

My machine with a GT 1030 runs AH at 1080p and 60 fps with slider set to none and disable pilot mesh, shadows, and reflections.

It has an i5-2400 CPU (3.1 GHz).

There you go jgroth. It's a cheap card not affected by mining but it would be a very specific upgrade for AH only. A 1050 ti or rx560 are pricey due to GPU shortages.

If one aims for a GT 1030 absolutely beware of the DDR4 version which is far slower than the common GDDR5 version.

Prices are completely insane.

They are about 3x previous list.

Today, your 1060 costs -- get ready for it -- $550.

 Fellow Pilots;
I must say, took y'all bit to warm up to my briefest of posits. Yet you have exceeded my expectations.
 This is a great game.
