Adoption WIP VMF-251 F4U-1A
« on: June 09, 2021, 10:25:17 PM »
This is an adoption from saxman, the in game name is VMO-251 and it's a very dark skin. VMO-251 flew Observation aircraft, F3FP and another photo aircraft. They later became VMF-251 and transferred to the F4U. I'm not sure what this corsair was, I really think it was a F4U-1D as the only info is a profile and it was labeled as a -1D. There is a possibility it was an FG-1A, there were 700 that were Gloss Sea Blue. With no pics and profile from Mark Styling https://www.markstyling.com/F4U_16.htm, this is what I got.

Thought i was happy with it in skin viewer then in game lighting kills some of the subtle fading.

Beautiful classic dark blue scheme.

At some point after the adoption of the overall dark blue paint scheme, did the Navy simply stop using Insignia blue on the Stars and Bars, and paint only the white portions?

Seems they stopped on Hellcats but continued on Corsairs, I’ll need to dig through a book on USN markings I have. I can’t remember if that was a factory decision or not and if it also dropped on Avengers and Helldivers.

Edit: So Grumman dropped it on their own and requested it become standard as it was redundant. Only problem was that Dark Sea Blue paint was inconsistent between manufactures until after the war, so insignia blue was still applied on all non Grumman factory aircraft.
