P-51D 352ndFG 487thFS LtCol John C Meyer "Petie 3rd"
« on: July 06, 2021, 11:19:27 PM »
Some WIP screenshots - still adjusting balance of various layers.  This is one of the group of bare metal P-51Ds I started in 2017 but did not finish, and has been calling out to me lately.  John C Meyer was the top surviving ace of the 352nd FG, and won a medal for his leadership and actions during the German surprise attack Operation Bodenplatte, early in the morning of Jan 1st, 1945.  The first shot is a comparison to a DCS skin for this aircraft.

Wow. Simply amazing. Another stellar contribution for our P-51D with stunning bare metal! <S>
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Beautiful job, Oboe.  Frankly, yours puts the DCS version to shame!

It's funny that FTJR and I were talking about the wing paint on Mustangs a couple days ago.  It's a tough effect to get right and here you come with this.   :x  Very nice.

What color are you using for wing paint?   I've mostly been going with paint-stripped metal on mine.   I may have to experiment with it to see if I can get one of my updates to look something like yours there.

What an awesome looking skin.   :salute

Thanks guys.  I ran across that DCS P-51D skin one day, and it inspired me to finish "Petie 3rd" for AH, if only to see how the AH P-51D compares to DCS's.   I find the majority of the DCS skins to be just this side of magnificent.  Its a 4K skin vs a 1K skin too, so the detail work on DCS skins can be so much more sharp.

Here is my wing paint color.  When I started working on the 51's, Fencer made a strong case for painted wing surfaces and I guess I just kept up with it all along.  I think the metal effect is stronger on vertical surfaces with some curves in them, like fuselage sides.

I have a real problem though with the graphics engine adding a blotchy pinkish-hued areas when I start adding details, grime and weathering.   Haven't found a way to suppress it.

The painted wing is entirely subjective absent photo evidence.   I've found so many pics with unpainted wings that I just defaulted to that for immersion.    Plus the fact that I haven't found a way to make it look right from the cockpit.   You may just have done it.   Sure looks great from outside!

Thanks for the info.

Your skin beats theirs even at reduced resolution.   That's saying something, my friend.

I have the same problem with blotches.   It's the way the engine translates the bitmap.   I mask it some with metal and noise but that's why painted wings are rare on my skins.    I've tried to give some of them a scuffed paint Look by adding that tiny bit of blue you'll see in some of them.   But it is a far different effect than what you are doing here.

I tip my hat.  This is really nice.

LMAO!  I'm just not sure if that's a compliment as far as it applies to me!  :P

(I'm looking forward to flying it, too.)

My bad, the top P-51 in the first screenshot composite is from A2A Simulations, not DCS.  Not sure what flight sim this is from, Prepar3D or the new MS Flight Simulator?
