"Chute the Works" was a B-24J of the 431st Bomb Squadron, part of the 11th Bomb Group. When war broke out in December 1941 the 11th BG B-17s were based in Hawaii and the Philippines and so the group was active from the start of the Pacific war. They later fought at the Battle of Midway and throughout the Solomons campaign, starting at Guadalcanal. In 1943 they re-equipped with the longer-ranged Liberator and continued to support the Aliied offensives in the Gilbert, Marshalls and Marianas Islands. For the last weeks of the war they flew missions against Japanese targets in China and Japan itself from Okinawa.
