Taffy

Lyric1 recently found me some photos of this P-38L while researching the 82nd FG for my last P-38J skin so I thought I'd skin it.

"Taffy" was the P-38L flown by 1st Lt Walter Zurney of the 82nd Fighter Group's 97th Fighter Squadron in 1945. It has the 82nd FG's red nose and spinners and the 97th FS' black tail markings, as well as two black diagonal stripes on the booms and a diamond marking on the nose. The stripes were likely a flight leader or rank indicator with the diamond denoting the flight (other aircraft had spades or clubs etc.) The 82nd FG was based in Italy and flew missions over Southern Europe until the end of the war. Zurney completed his tour of 50 missions before the war's end and returned to the States. He remained in the Air Force post-war, eventually retiring with the rank of Major.

Beautiful.  I MIGHT tone down the red a bit.   Might.   Tough call.  Looks great though either way.

Ordinarily I would make the red duller but the colour photos of this aircraft do show a very bright red.

That looks great Greebo - I've never seen that large engine cowl panel section look more like metal; you've also been able to highlight the complex curve in its shape.

Yes, but it still could use a five or ten percent desaturation.    The game engine overpowers the shape of the spinners with that color.   It makes the red almost seem like it is hovering over the object rather than being fused with it.

It's a tough call.  I'll defer.

I do agree that the red spinners are a little too intense. Perhaps if you used the same red that you used for "Joanie" That was a nice vivid red.

I've submitted this one already as I didn't know when (or if) HT is processing the skins this month, but I'll have another look at the red next month.

Also found a bunch of nose shots of other 97th squadron P-38's with card suite emblems just in case someone else wants to do one. "Taffy" was the only one I could fill in the rest of the blanks at this point.
