This 222 Squadron Tempest was based at Quackenbruck in Germany during the last days of the war in Europe. Unusually for a Tempest it had nose art, a skull and cross bones on the left hand fuselage. Its upper wing roundels had the yellow and white rings common to 2nd Tactical Air Force aircraft in 1945, although these markings were smaller than normal. As an extra identification aid the lower wing roundels had yellow borders too. I guess friendly fire was probably as much of a danger as the enemy by this point in the war.
