VC-8 FM-2
« on: January 14, 2023, 03:08:11 AM »
VC-8, with a mix of FM-2 and TBM aircraft, formed the composite air group of the escort carrier USS Nehenta Bay from May 1945. It's aircraft were painted in the distinctive escort carrier late war ID scheme of white blocks and yellow stripes, with the squadron's barbed spearhead emblem on the tail. VC-8 fought at Okinawa, conducting strike missions against Japanese forces on the island as well as protecting the fleet against air attack. In August 1945 this particular VC-8 FM-2 was written off when it overshot the arrestor wires and ploughed into a group of aircraft parked on the front of the flight deck.

Ooooo...   If there is a TBM in a similar scheme (that hasn't been done yet), would be sweet to see her done.  :x

Great job! I’ve seen the photos of the pile up of aircraft, looks like Houston rush hour.

I've already done a a TBM skin from VMTB-143 with a similar late war escort carrier scheme, although on this one both the ID stripes and blocks are white with the block areas running down the thickest part of the wing. I may skin another one but ideally to make it different from the first I'd prefer something with yellow stripes rather than white. I'll have a dig around for a photo of something suitable.

That is slick.  I don't get into a fm2 much, but when I do, I will be losing my cartoon life in this one.

A few options I have.

Thanks for the info Lyric1. I'm pretty sure I skinned the VC-90 TBM on the old AH1 shape. There's something about this scheme the profile artist didn't pick up on; like the tail both wingtips have two chord-wise white bands and a yellow stripe. I prefer this scheme as the white and yellow markings are painted on the top and bottom of both wings, not just on the two panels opposite the stars and bars as on every other TBM scheme I have seen so far.

I see that now in this link.

Thanks for the link, the VMF-213 F4U-1D shown there looked nice and I found a photo of it but the scheme turned out to be post-war unfortunately.

Does anyone know when this type of late war escort carrier scheme was first introduced by the USN? The photos I've seen that are dated all say July or August, just wondering if it might have been mandated earlier than that.

I can check tonight, got a book at home that has all the carrier group markings and dates.
