Bf 109G-6/AS (G-14) III/Jg 1
« on: January 21, 2023, 01:31:38 PM »
Yellow 14 was a Bf 109G-6/AS - a high altitude variant with a boosted engine and tall tail, which makes it more appropriate for the AH 109G-14. This aircraft was filmed at it's base at Paderborn, Germany in the late spring of 1944. This footage was shown in German movie theaters on June 28th. By this point, III/Jg 1 had deployed to France in reaction to the Allied invasion at Normandy. Fighting on the invasion front took it's brutal toll on JG 1 with 106 aircraft and 30 pilots lost while only making 32 victory claims. One of the notable pilots killed was commander of III Gruppe, Karl-Heinz Weber (136 kills), who was shot down by Mustangs north of Paris on June 7.

Yellow 14 features camouflage in the standard day-fighter grays of RLM 74 and 75 over light blue 76. The large JG 1 emblem is painted on the cowl and it's red colored Reich defense tail band on the rear fuselage. The factory transport code letters were painted over in RLM 74, the first two letters are obviously "TO" but the last two "JK" are speculation by me based on what little of them can be seen peeking out from the edges of the tail band. The yellow III Gruppe vertical bar is in an unusually high position. The gear legs and wheels were painted red to denote the need for 100 octane "C3" fuel.

I also updated my existing Jg 1 109G-14 to maintain consistency in colors.
