This is the Tempest flown by Wing Commander Roland Beamont in early 1944 when he was commanding 150 Wing. As a Wing Commander it carried his initials rather than a squadron code, as well as a yellow spinner that was unique to his aircraft. The black and white stripes under the wings were an ID marking applied to Typhoons and Tempests at this time to help AA gunners tell them apart from FW 190s.
Beamont scored his first kill in a Hurricane during the Battle of France in 1940 and later fought in the Battle of Britain. In late 1941 he was attached to Hawker as a test pilot where he helped develop the Hawker Typhoon. He flew this aircraft operationally with 609 Squadron from July 1942 and was promoted to lead the squadron in November. In mid 43 he resumed his test pilot duties at Hawker, this time to help develop the Tempest. By early 1944 he was asked to form the RAF's first Tempest Wing, No. 150. In the run up to D Day the wing flew sweeps and ground attack missions over France. Beamont scored the first Tempest kill (a Bf 109) over Normandy on June 8th. Shortly after this the wing was switched to anti V-1 duties where they downed 638 in the next couple of months, 32 of which were scored by Beamont. On 2nd October Beamont scored his ninth and final kill over Holland but he was shot down by flak 10 days later and remained a POW until the end of the war.
