Quest 3 and Aces High
« on: November 03, 2023, 04:40:15 PM »
I recently got a Quest 3.
I discovered that when using the Oculus software, the video quality is degraded by their choice of Codec and compression.
So, I use Virtual Desktop to connect the Quest 3 by wireless as a SteamVR/OpenXR headset.
This dramatically increases the visual quality over the Oculus software link/airlink.
However, when I try using it with Aces High, the world gets distorted and the head tracking is odd.
If I use the Oculus software and the link cable or airlink everything looks normal, but the image quality is much lower.

I would appreciate it if someone has a clue how to get Virtual Desktop/Quest 3/Steam/Aces High to behave correctly.
I still have my Reverb G2, so I can compare to see if it has similar problems to isolate whether it involves the Quest 3/Virtual desktop or Steam/Aces High.

I have eliminated Virtual Desktop as the problem.
If I use Steam VR while using Oculus AirLink, I see the same exact problem.
The only way I can get normal VR is to use the Oculus software.

The Reverb G2 works normally with Steam VR and Aces High.
So the problem is unique to the Quest 3/Steam VR/Aces High combination.

Aerofly FS4 has normal video/head tracking with Steam VR/Quest 3. So, that problem is unique to Aces High/Quest 3.
However, they both have a light blue square outline with a smaller center square that is visible in the Steam room prior to starting the games.

Any more observations?  I've been using the Oculus software without having a clue that the Steam Open VR version might have better graphics.. currently using VR only sporadically due to the game looking so much better when I am not under the "hood".

Oculus and AMD 7000 series graphics cards don't play well together.
So that is part of my problem.
I have found in DCS World that using Virtual Desktop with a wireless link gives me better image quality than Oculus over hard wire link.
But the only way I can use Virtual Desktop with Aces High is Steam VR.
But Steam VR + Oculus Quest 3 + Aces High produces a weird head position/tracking problem.
Interestingly enough, I can create the same problem by setting Pixel Density to 1.3 in DCS World.
As soon as I set Pixel Density back to 1.0, the problem goes away.
Maybe Steam VR and/or Aces High is enabling the same setting to improve image quality... but causes a problem with the Quest 3.

Right now, I have only two choices if I want to fly in Aces High:
Revert to the Reverb G2 or sacrifice image quality by using the native Oculus software.
If Aces High supported OpenXR, that would either solve the problem or expose that Aces High is triggering the same problem that I have when using a higher Pixel Density with the Quest 3 in DCS World settings.

If you don't have an AMD 7000 series gpu + Quest 3, you probably don't have my problem and your video quality may be the same no matter which VR interface you use.
It is best not to use Steam VR because it has some overhead. But Aces High runs very fast compared to most flight sims, so Steam VR probably doesn't cost any frame rates if you happen to like its interface and settings.

If I use the link cable instead of the air link, I can get the visual quality of the Native Oculus app nearly equal to the Virtual Desktop wireless link and still maintain 90 fps.
But to use the link cable, I have to bypass the extended battery pack.

My Quest 3 is still sitting in the box. Meanwhile my new joystick works great!

Bypass the extended battery pack?  When I use the link cable with my Oculus Quest V1.0, it charges as I play. So, no reason to worry about battery life..?

I moved from the Quest 2 to Quest 3.  The biggest difference I see is the visual quality is much better.  During a fight I can see a lot more detail on the target plane.  My squad says my audio sounds better and I think I'm able to hear VOX communications without interruption.  With the Quest 2 my VOX communications would cut out frequently.  I have not tried to use a wireless configuration yet.  I did try wireless with the Quest 2 and it was unplayable.  Is this worth $500?  For me, yes.
