This is the Hurricane Mk IIB of Pilot Officer John "Scottie" McLean Edmiston of 81 Squadron RAF while based at Vaenga airbase in Northern Russia in the Autumn of 1941. Prior to this Edmiston had served with the Merchant Ship Fighter Unit whose Hurricanes were catapulted off the front of merchant ships to deter of shoot down enemy Condor recon aircraft before ditching in the sea or bailing out. In Russia he was credited with two kills of Bf109s, later flew with two other squadrons and survived the war with the rank of Squadron Leader.
Following the Nazi invasion of Russia in 1941 Britain and the Soviet Union signed a treaty agreeing to aid each other in their fight against the common enemy and for neither to sign a separate peace. As part of this agreement Britain were to send convoys of weapons and other materials to the port of Murmansk in Northern Russia. This meant the ships running a gauntlet of U boats, surface ships and Luftwaffe bombers based in Norway and Finland, as well as the frozen arctic seas. As part of the first convoy an old carrier HMS Argus ferried 24 Hurricanes of the RAF's 151 Wing who flew on the Vaenga airbase near Murmansk once in range. Their job was to cover the convoy on its approach to Murmansk, although in this case the Germans were taken by surprise and all the ships made it safely to port undetected. For the next few months the RAF pilots flew 365 sorties while also training local Soviet pilots and ground crew to fly and maintain their aircraft. They claimed 11 109s and 3 Ju 88s shot down during their stay in Russia before returning home.
