FW 190A-8 flown by Hans Dortenmann,
Staffelcapitan of 2./JG 54 in July 1944. This squad was relocated to France from northwest Russia in response to the D-Day landings. Dortenmann began the war as a Wehrmacht infantryman and transferred to the Luftwaffe to begin pilot training in 1941, eventually being posted to I/Jg 54 in November 1943. He scored 15 victories over the Soviets before the move to France. The promotion to commander of 2./JG 54 came on June 12 with the death of then commander, Horst Forbig. Dortenmann would lead that squadron into 1945 through a series of changes in the organization of JG 54's squadrons in France. 2
Staffel was redesignated 12./JG 54 and incorporated into III/JG 54 in August while equipping the brand new FW 190D-9. III/ JG 54 was made directly subordinate to JG 26 that December, eventually being redesignated IV/JG 26 in February 1945, with Dortenmann's
Staffel becoming 14./JG 26. In late March, he was moved into I/JG 26 to lead 3./JG 26 and he was also awarded the Knight's Cross at this time - the final member of JG 26 to receive the medal. From the time of being posted to France until the end of the war, he added 22 victories against the Americans and British and two more Soviets, a pair of Yaks over Berlin.
Dortenmann's machine features the standard gray camouflage scheme with the colorful markings typical of Jg 54 in 1944. The 2
staffel emblem of a devil riding a trident like a witch's broom was painted on the cowl. The green heart emblem of JG 54 contains the shield badge of III/JG 54 inside it. A blue tail band was used by III/JG 54 to aid in quick identification in it's Reich defense mission. An inscription reading
"Hascherl 1" (Poor Soul 1) was painted on the fuselage.
