I reckon you haven’t come across a wild boar before. Their tusks make a Bowie knife look like a tooth pick.

No they don't have them here, but if they did I'd probably leave them in peace. Do you have Rastafari there? It was a light-hearted Enter the Dragon reference, but then I started getting MA flashbacks: J0ker shot you down, with two wingmen, after running you through ack after a two-sector chase because he was co-e to start with.

We have 'em around here. Someone posted this last week on nextdoor.

Here we put salt on Margaritas, not sidewalks.

I have never heard of such a method.  Why not just run curs?  They live to hunt, will sniff out a hog with no problem, and have way more stamina than pitbulls.  Not to mention the chaos that must ensue while trying to use two separate groups of dogs, for two separate jobs on the same hunt.

Seriously jump on youtube and search for "wild pig hunting nz" .

Basic setup (I think, I'm no expert nor pig hunter) is the hunter has tracking/chasing dogs, bailing dogs (they corner the pig), and sometimes holding dogs (they will hold the pig by the ears or leg). The dogs are often fitted with gps trackers and they roam over a wide area looking for the pig scent or sign. Some of the dogs may wear protective collars to avoid getting fatal injuries from the pigs.

Quite often you'll see the pig hunters driving around with the dogs on the bonnet, or on a rear flat deck sniffing the air for a scent. If the dogs catch a scent they'll jump off, chase the back, and bail it up (corner it).

Pig dogs here are usually mongrel breeds, a real mix, and very aggressive.

Or you can use cur dogs (https://www.rover.com/blog/cur-dogs/) and call it a day.  I guess using trucks is what's throwing me off.  In most parts of the South you're hunting hog on foot due to the dense habitat they live in, or run to.  Maybe wide open farm land calls for a different approach.  Not sure how, but whatever works.

The Dogo was bred just for this purpose,it was developed in Argentina as an all purpose pig dog. It has several breeds in its development including Great Danes,Pointers and Bullterriers and was bred to be white so it is easily seen.

Before Kevlar came around they used tire treads to make harnesses to help defend the dog’s throats and flanks.

Check out a little pig dog called the Paterdale terrier or Fell Terrier as it’s also known, they start pups at around 10 weeks chasing little 40lb pigs for training. The dog itself is barely 25 lbs at full growth, and no you don’t want one as a pet! It’s purely a working dog and will destroy your house when it becomes bored.

In Louisiana they use Catahoola (Not Spelled Correctly) Curr. They are bred purely for running pigs. I have one as a family pet and she completely destroys any dog toy we give her even the Kong indestructible toys. I have seen her chew those in half in less than five minutes.

Must be pretty tasty meat to go to all this effort. They don't look tasty. Look a bit like 4-footer lobsters. They're clearly bugs.

Trucks let the hunters cover a large area to pick up the scent, the terrain the pigs will run into/hide in require legwork. They're generally not hunting the side of the road, and will travel a mile or miles by foot once the scent is picked up.

They do feed a lot of people but it's also about sport.  It can get intense.  But regardless of the hunter's motive, everyone benefits as wild hogs are invasive to N. America and cause a lot of damage.  An estimated $2.5 billion worth every year in the U.S.

I know a fellow in Florida that uses Catahoula dogs to hunt pigs,he wants to inject some catch dog into his lines and I suggested a Scott line American Bulldog or the Dogo de Argentina. We are just now seeing wild pigs in Ontario, some managed to cross the lake a few years ago when it froze over completely. Unfortunately they are low on the to do list and will likely get a foothold before it’s decided that something needs to be done.

I’m not a huge fan of hunting dogs except for Terriers but most the terriers I’ve owned have been the fighting breeds.I detest dog fighting but I enjoy the history of it and the breeds used are some of the best dogs you can own. In the past I used to take a dog or 2 to my MIL’s farm and let them loose in the grainery to take care of any rats and mice, that is something to see if you’ve never witnessed it.
