Dueling custom Arena - free to play
« on: May 16, 2026, 11:56:41 AM »
Ive been noticing this custom arena being ran by Hotrod. Its based on the match play arena. Ive jumped in there a couple of times to see if I could speak to him and/or to get another player to randomly log in, but havent had luck. This arena allows players to fight each other in the furball lake without AI, and allows people to fight in canyons like we use to. Im wondering if people just arent seeing it when log in due to the clipboard tabs at the top they may be unaware of. Maybe no one goes in because it always says 1 player... wish we could get something going in there in order to popularize the arena. I believe its free to play as well. My only suggestion would be to add airspawns, turn all the fields green, and turn killshooter off so that its 100% FFA which limits ganging by one team in the furball.

In anycase, id like to see if we can get this arena more active as I think it would be great for free fights and helping news players get into action and learn some combat.

Thanks for posting this. I might check it out today. I think I'll have to reset up all my controllers though as I have new ones since I last played.  I've tried set up a custom arena before with 3 fields that was great for fights, but like you said the only way people seemed to realize it was there was if you announced it in the MA which kinda defeats the purpose if you don't have a sub. Like you said also, I do wish it was more obvious so that people could find it.

Yes, all the tabs needs to be removed, there is really no need for them. It would certainly be a good place to figure out controls rather than being buzzed by AI constantly. I like the AI for Matchplay, but not being able to roll anywhere else is an issue ive had for a long time with that arena.

Hi DmonSlyr

I'm trying to keep this arena up 24/7, but not there very often myself. Yes it is available for players who don't have access to the MA yet.

I would set it up the way you want but haven't figured out the "Match Play" settings so at the moment I can't get them to work. I suspect they are above my privilege status.

I've mastered most of the other settings though by trial and error. The arena is now set up pretty much the way I remember the old DA was set up. However I've made a few tweaks to assist fair play.

For example, you can't use external views or the stall limiter. You can now see opponent icons on radar as soon as they hit the runway. So you can see early or late uppers. I also noticed that the fog settings have a big influence on frame rates so I tweaked the fog to improve visibility and I'm getting almost double the frame rate over furball lake than I get in the MA so that should even the field for lower end PC users. Also, the time is set for two in the afternoon, great light permanently, no poor lighting to spoil it for the older eyes.

I've had some great fights there, but I notice a lot of players can't see it when invited because they can't find it on the arena list clipboard. They need to hit the "All" tab on the clipboard otherwise they get a limited view of the available arenas and can't see it.

I'm already failing to keep it up permanently because the connection seems to drop every few days and I don't always notice. Also the power supply failed and it was down while I waited for Amazon to deliver a new one so I could swap it out.

I suspect it won't ever be as popular as the old duelling arena used to be, because it was always a small percentage of the player base who enjoyed it, but with luck it will pick up a bit.

If you know how to implement the changes you wanted PM me and I'll see if I can make it work.

The bold is a wish list item for me. All arenas should be on one tab. Most people dont even see those tabs and youve confirmed it once again. Wouldn't this be an easy fix? I dont understand why we need the tabs...

Thanks for hosting it. You may want to fix the stall thing. We were in there on Saturday night doing some canyon fights and it was great fun, however a player reported he was having stalling issues. I would allow players to have stall limiter as it may effect their settings, though Id never recommend using stall limiter.

I wonder if anyone knows how spawns work? It would be much better to have spawns over furball lake so you dont have to take off, which limits vulching and makes the fights even quicker to jump back into the action.

Thanks for hosting though!  :salute

If you click the ALL tab it becomes the default list/tab.

Is that an easy fix for Hitech??? Maybe, call him and ask.

My guess, the tabs were made at a different time when the menu may have gotten more crowded. Obviously, it’s to help players filter out what they don’t want or need to see.

I have doubts HT would take time to change it. We barely get time for other things.

It’s not hard to just say view the All tab.

No offense, but players wishes are constantly calling on to change some coding. Give into 1 give into 1000. Don’t hold your breath. If he acted on all wishes the entire game would be re-coded.

If HT does decide to change it it’s just icing on the cake.

It’s not that big of a deal, >IMO<

BTW, thanks to all involved for effort to make something better. It sure beats sniveling while doing nothing. <S>

If players dont see the 'all' tab, they are not going to click it. They just see Melee arena and insta click it wothout really looking around. That is the issue. Its better for the game to have players see all of the open arenas at all times because they'll never think to click the tabs back to see other arenas in the future. There aren't enough arenas to make the tabs necessary.
