Bf 110E flown by Felix Maria Brandis of 1.(Z)/JG 77 (later redesignated to 13.(Z)/JG 5) in September 1941. Brandis landed this plane by mistake in Northern Sweeden after getting lost in bad weather. While he and his gunner were repatriated to German forces in Finland right away, the plane was examined for 2 weeks before being returned to Germany.
The "Dachshund Staffel" was created as the sole Bf 110 unit in the far north sectors of the Eastern Front. Originally attached to I/JG 77 at Herdla, Norway; they were folded into JG 5 upon that geschwader's creation in January 1942. The emblem dachshund chewing on an I-16 references the three dogs that served as their mascots, Bamsa, Herdla, and Lockheed. It's also a bit of a tongue-in-cheek reference to the German nickname for the I-16
Rata "rat" and the dachshund's propensity for hunting them.
This plane features heavy application of RLM 70 black-green on the fuselage and vertical stabilizers. The rest of the camouflage is the standard grays of RLM 74 and 75 over 76. The prop spinners are black with 1/3 in white and tipped in yellow. The white section only extends to the baseplate on the port side, but goes all the way back on the starboard side. 8 victory marks are painted on the tail. The "A" on the engine cowl indicates an up-rated engine needing 100 octane fuel.
