Red Flight:
[list=1]
  • Sancho: claim one spit destroyed, bailed
  • RGJ: bailed
  • Oblittoo: claims assist on mosquito, RTB'd
  • Solas: claims one spit, one mossie, RTB'd
  • Ammo: claims one spit, one mossie, RTB'd
  • Nibbio: claims two typhoons, RTB'd
Totals: 2 aircraft lost (1 pilot bailed safely, 1 pilot captured), 7 enemy aircraft destroyed

JG56 ("Der Daimler Benz Wolfsatz") took off from A24 in Bf109G10.  Flew SW towards the channel where mosquitos were reported at our ammo factory.  412 was engaged with mossies.  by the time we got there, 412 had all died and we engaged the 5 spits, shooting down 2 of them, and 2 mossies.  As we were refueling, Ammo was on top cover and spotted another mossie, which he destroyed.  We took off again and were assaulted by 3 typhoons.  They bravely engaged 6 109s and a long fight ensued.  They covered each other well and killed RGJ and me before we eliminated them all, the remainder of JG56 RTB A19.

all, this was a promising start for the Saturday TOD!

FunkedUp-CFIT
Rosco-Bikekil
Band-Salt

5 Fw 190 confirmed destroyed
2 Fw 190 probably destroyed
2 Me 109 probably destroyed
Rosco Discoed undamaged.
All others KIA/MIA.

First off I'd like to give a shout out to our guests Awulf and Joedirt who were no-shows.

We took off from A41 with orders to fighter sweep enemy coast near A17, then CAP A40 and A42 against Jabos. We had Spit IX with drop tanks and max internal fuel.

We headed towards our CAP station and as we hit the shore the flak opened up. So we swirled around an dodged the flak. It looked like nothing was happening for a while and then we saw some low dots East of us. We decided to let them get feet wet an then take a shot at them.

They flew pretty much right under us, and I almost couldn't believe it. They were 190s and they kept going West towards England. I bounced them immediately and got one, then another. The rest of the squadron came in and got two more. Two of them ran off hide in the ack at A19 and we chased them around, then we lost track of them.

So we headed back towards our CAP station and Bike spotted two low flights. We thought these might be more enemy Jabos but they were Mossies. They hadn't made any report of enemy contact but they were in the process of being chewed up by a pair of 190s. So we came in and dispatched the 190s for them.

Then we climbed to cover them while they attacked. Right at this time Rosco discoed, but Bike thought he was still flying and followed his "ghost ship" and ended up getting bounced by 109s. However Bike didn't say anything about the 109s on RW.

The rest of us headed back towards the CAP station and ran into a pair of slightly high 109s which we engaged W of A14. They were decent pilots and knew how to use the superior performance of their aircraft.

Unfortunately Band and Salt got a little confused and didn't join the attack until it was a little late and we had lost initiative. Then a third 109 joined the fray and I called for disengagement and RTB. As I called repeatedly to head West, CFIT, Band, and Salt kept going East and turning with the 109s.

I was still pissed off about Rosco and Bikekil getting lost. I was running on 4-5 hours of sleep and no coffee. The clusterf_ck with these 109s put me over the top. I had forgotten that Band had RW failure and I didn't realize that Rosco had discoed. So I apologize for some of my language...

Anyways as CFIT/Band/Salt dwaddled they got bounced by some 190s in addition to the 109s. I didn't know about this and kept going and yelling on RW for them to come home. Eventually Salt got shot down but CFIT, Band and I were able to get back to A41 safely.

We were about to land but there were ominous dots offshore. So we flew down to A42 where we saw more dots. We chased them but they ran away. So we landed and refueled.

After that we took off and climbed towards the enemy coast, hoping to bounce some Huns. We got halfway across the channel when AK reported a fight with 109s near A19 and Seeker reported a fight with 190s near A14. By the time we found the 109s, the AKs were dead. The 109s ran East and we were not about to chase them with our slow Spits.

Then Seeker said he had one survivor from his flight running home. We saw low dots just feet wet S of us and went to check it out. There were 5-6 190s but I wanted to save Seeker's pilot. So I blew past the higher ones and attacked 3 lower ones. I hit one of them with 3 point blank bursts of 20 mm and nothing came off. I was livid at this point so I stayed on him. Right as I was putting a final 20 mm burst into him my plane exploded. Band and CFIT fought for a while and brought down another 190 or two before dying.

I apologize to the squadron for getting them all shot down. At least we gave as good as we got!

Lessons Learned:
1. Go to bed earlier on Friday.
2. Drink coffee if I don't get enough sleep.
3. Prozac.
3. Make squaddies get RW squared away BEFORE the event.

Round table - YMMV Sqdn

Roll call

Seeker
Shane
Badboy
Des
Flying Dutchmn
Iron2
Oldman
Anrky
Troll
Otter

Sortie #1

Strike on 19 SB's.

After intial pre-sortie nerves (nameless pilot #1 "I bailed on the RW!") and excitement (nameless pilot #2 "oh look! Killshooter's off; Hahahaha!") all ten ships made take off and formed for the sortie with out event.

On leaving the English coast, we were spotted by I believe two enemy aircraft, possibly 109's. We lost at least one pilot (Iron2) during this engagement (possibly to friendly fire, nameless pilot #3), and I'm under the impression we lost Anarky there too., Luckily for us Funked's boys came to the rescue and other than the occasional tallying of other friendly Squads as bogies we proceeded to target.

(note to Funked, sorry we didn't call, I blame Shane!)

Due to fuel concerns, The Kraits were running at less than maximum cruise, with the result that both squads reached the IP at the same time, and in conjunction with higher bogies at the target location. In the resultant over crowded airspace all thought of formation attack was forgotten, and individual pilots engaged ack, shore batteries and enemy A/C in what ever order they happened to drift in front of their sights. Whilst in the target area, Des and Oldman were brought down by the enemies ack, while Shane was, in so far as I am aware, given the coup de grace by a Messerschmitt.

The Round Table claim four acks and five shore batteries from this engagement.

The remaining five ships set course for 41 due to fuel concerns and a need to replenish stores; and RTB'd without further incident.Sadly, upon arrival Troll's Mosquito was found to be too severely damaged by ground fire to continue.

Sortie #2

Strike on 19's Shore batteries.

Re-armed and replenished, the surviving Round Table pilots took off for Sortie #2 in good order, merrily waving goodbye as Otter (who wishes he could be nameless pilot #4),stuffed his at the end of the runway.

FD, Badboy and myself thus left for 14.

Upon arrival at 14, we found to our horror the enemy were assembling at 14 at a height of around 8K. Typically for the Germans, they were so absorbed by the task of gaining a perfect formation before goose-flying further we were able to make a perfect dive run for the target. Unfortunately 14's shore batteries had as yet been untouched, and a veritable wall of ack rose to meet us, killing FD on approach, removing my left wing on egress, and leaving Badboy smoking like a steam train. As the enemy had by now at least deigned to notice us, Badboy and I made a second attempt in the target, in the certain knowledge they'd run us down anyway if we attempted to extend to safety. In vain sadly, as Badboy, unused to static targets, missed completely, and I was deftly dewinged by the ack gunners whose nemesis I had become. Hanging in the Silk, I looked on helples as Badz attempted to fight off the NMA horde with smoking engines, shattered wings and some prayers. Alas, it was not to be......

The Round Table make no further score from Sortie #2.

We await our further orders.

Seeker, Round Table X.O.

(Film available upon request)

And...thanks to all involved we all enjoyed it immensley!);)

(Note to Nim, after more thourugh post frame BDA Round table have the sad duty to reduce thier claim by one SB. The person responsible has had his knees stapled together.....)

Unofficial AAR of the 92nd:

Flying with 5 pilots for the RAF
Typhoons

Person 1 "Lets roll gentlemen"

Person 2 "Rolling"

Person 1 "Ok, stay at this altitude, pick up my heading"

Person 3 "I missed the briefing, what is our objective?"

Person 1 "We are flying NOE to hit a factory"

Person 3 "NOE? With all these bombs? All this fuel? And when we meet enemies?"

Person 4 "We are dead meat if we encounter enemies"

Person 5 "It's FUBAR if you ask me. Of course we are going to encounter enemies. I think it is suici..."

Person 1 "ENEMIES 9 O'CLOCK HIGH"

Person 4 "What did he say?"

Person 1 "They are on our six!"

Person 5 "Hey look guys planes with all the same, red names are joining us"

Person 1 "Break! Break! Break!"

Person 2 "Yeah that's what my wings are doin...."

From this point the radio went static. The 92nd was not heard of again.

It was fun while it lasted. A promising first flight of the 92nd in the TOD. We are looking forward to next week :)

------------------------------------------------------------

Approaching target, I saw a 190 at 9oc, called him out then did
some dodging maneuvers at <200 ft which easily threw the FW
off my 6.  As we continued to target, a FW flew out in front of me,
and I started blasting him from 3-400 yds but saw no hits.  As I
was following him, I realized I was about to go feet dry, which
I wasn't supposed to do, and FunkedUp's group was engaging
the enemy anyway, so I broke off and rejoined my flight.

When I arrived over target, there were friendly planes
everywhere, I pickled all my bombs on two shore batteries, did
one strafing run on another, then boom!, I was dead.  Don't
know what hit me, but I guess it was ack.

That was the 412th Funked.  We only had 4 in our flight and we had just finished wiping out a flight of 6 typhs without loss.  We started grabbing back towards the coast when we saw your dots high.  We were under the impression that you were engaged with friendlies as we had called enemies in the sector but we were mistaken.

When you jumped us we lost two and Midnight and I ran for the cover of the ack at A19.  We were in 190A8's so we were not even going to try to mix it up with your spits.  We then saw the two flights of mossies coming in towards the coast.  We headed for them at full throttle as we had been ordered to put up a defense at all costs.  It was awesome to see about 40 Mossies all on the deck hauling along, we had trouble catching them.

Midnight and I dove into the Mossies, getting one each and damaging more before your spits dove on us again.  We tried to disengage but Midnight fell into your pack and I followed soon after when I again tried to attack the Mossies.

During the entire frame the 412th did not see another friendly aircraft, even though we were asking for reinforcements. :(

Final tally for 412th (approx):

6 typhs confirmed destroyed (1 blew himself up jettisoning bombs)
2 Mossies confirmed destroyed
2+ Mossies damaged
20+ Mossie pilots requiring change of underwear

4 FW190A8s destroyed by Spits

I got 3 personally before I was shot down, was a blast.  Really got the adrenaline going.

BTW Did those Mossies make a call when they went feet dry?  The Typhs didn't wither that I can recall.  It was part of the ROE that ALL flights of aircraft crossing the coast of the enemy country below radar height make a call on Channel 1.  I didn't see any but I was busy.

To give you some perspective, we were at 8" manifold and 200 RPM to conserve fuel.......let's say half throttle.

"BTW Did those Mossies make a call when they went feet dry?"

I was under the impression that we only had to announce if we crossed the coast under 1000ft. Subsequently we stayed on the deck until we could see the target, went full throttle and then zoomed up directly into our jabo run, the intention being to actually pass over the coast at 1001 feet :) ; so you're quite correct, Round table squad, at least, did not call. I hope that's allright? (TOD newby here....)

On the other hand, our target was capped and we zoomed up through the enemy to dive down to target. In the circumstances it could well be a few of us were sub 1K, but to offset that, seeing as we were heavily engaged, I don't think you could call it a sneak attack :)

You're right, it was a blast seeing a full Mossie NOE raid. Want the film?

Keez, I assure you, it would have been a massacre anywhere, and at least NOE we had the element of surprise.  Do you think heavy mossies can successfully outclimb 109s?  No matter where we went, 109/190s were gonna be above us.  I chose to try to take direct NOE routes to targets and reported great success on the most part.  The AK's completely destroyed the Barracks Facilty SE A12, and RTB'd (although a couple had fuel problems).  The Round Table and Kraits did a great job on the SB's at 14, 19.

Sorry your mission didnt go so well, I'm sure you cleared the way for others.  You are a brave, brave soul!

HEY!!!  If I remember correctly, and well I have the film to PROVE IT, my plane safely landed.  I saw the funniest thing on the way to the runway though, AKIron stranded in a field kickin' his plane.  Hey dont blame it on the plane.  I think its a chronic condition in your case :D
